A new bolt here, a new bolt there, a new bolt everywhere.
Did you try keeping it in 4lo then engaging your locker. Then disengage your locker and work your way back to 2wd. I know if the locker remains engaged the truck wont get out of 4lo as a safety precaution.

my truck did this to me TODAY ,I did all the stuff I could to get it out of 4 low , after 20 minutes ,of this shit ,It came out ,of 4 low , I almost call a tow truck , I"m going to jack all four wheels up at home and run it through the 4 low cycle off and on , I gotta see if it will work for the next time I need to use it , what would a trail fix be ? long ride home in 4 low ? My first though was I wish this was a manual shift xcase !

Dealer has fixed my issue the actuator was broken.

    The part was on back-order.

Makes me wonder if this is another problem that may hit our 3rd gens.

I'll be picking it up tonight and I will be turning on 4wd/ 4lo more frequently.

Toyota has been failing on actuators for 50 years now. My Uncles 1960's Land cruiser had a vacuum actuator that only worked part of the time. My buddies 10 year old 4Runner had to have the Tcase split and the actuator replaced ($1500). Like I said before, GIVE US A FUCKING LEVER!!! If you're too weak to operate a manual lever, you're too weak to drive a truck!

I believe the new 4runners have gone back to the manual lever. Hopefully this will translate to other Toyota 4x4s in the future.

    Hello,

Is the actuator external? What was the nature of the failure. I am curious....

Sorry when I say new I mean 2016-2017. At least on the trail. I saw it on a review I watched on one of them. They even said it was a more robust design.

I'm glad my land cruiser is AWD with a lever but fuck me I'll pay extra for manual t case, why can 4-runners get manual t cases?

I’m having the same problem. It broke an hour from home so I just had it towed to a shop. Quote incoming tomorrow. This is a commercial vehicle repair shop and the guy does some odd jobs on regular cars and things-not a dealership so the price won’t be crazy inflated. One of the actuators for this poorly designed pos 4wd system has failed for sure

Having trouble getting out of 4lo is a common problem with all 4X4 vehicles including the old school trucks with manual shift levers. I've been driving 4X4's since the 1970's and have had several instances where I had problems. So far putting it in reverse and backing up 10-15' then pulling forward 10-15' has always worked. Although I've had to do that little dance several times on a couple of occasions.

In 2016 I was in the Utah desert when I came upon some cowboys rounding up cattle on BLM land. Their F250 was 4X4, but for whatever reason wouldn't shift into 4X4. They were pulling a stock trailer with horses and cattle and couldn't get enough traction in the dirt road to get up a hill in 4X2. I pulled them up with my Tacoma in 4lo. Total weight of their truck and trailer had to be 15,000 lbs. The little Tacoma was pulling it's guts out but got them up to the top. I only drove 100 yards in 4X4, but it took me several tries to get her to let go of low range.
