If your truck is a manual transmission, you have to be fully stopped and have the clutch all the way on the floor.

Tacoma is an automatic, electric 4WD. I tried neutral and park. Turned the truck off and let it set for an hour. Fired it back up, switched from 2WD to 4low a couple of times and it healed itself. Heard a noise like a ping and it shifted back to 2WD.

Sucks but this may be the only way to go, I would simply take it to a driveline shop.

Or, now that it's working, take your chances and exercise it a little.....

There's a procedure to it. It's in the manual, and mine has an info card on the visor, and a sticker on the inside left door. Exercise it once a month at least. It will help commit it to memory.

Put the truck in reverse and back up 10-15', then pull forward 10-15' then try. Make sure you're going from 4lo to 4hi. Don't try to go directly from 4lo to 2hi. If it doesn't work the 1st time repeat this little dance until it does. Once in 4hi simply start driving and then shift to 2hi.

This is VERY common with ANY 4X4 vehicle. They can often be hard to get out of 4lo and the above procedure is the correct way to do it.

Old school here,, I have always backed up before going from 4 low to 4 high. Relieves tension in drive train.
