This very same thing happened to me today. Although on second gen.

Was in 4Hi, switched to 4Lo. 4Lo keeps flashing and does not engage so I leave it in 4lo while driving. Randomly 4lo kicks in and engages while moving in 4hi and I immediately lose power to all 4 wheels.

Pushing gas pedal just revs the engine and does not move me anywhere. 4Hi and 4Lo lights are on and steady.

Take shift out of drive and put shift gear into park, and I get a grinding noise. Put shift gear into drive and I get a really loud grinding + screeching noise from transfer case actuator.

Change back to 4Hi, 4lo light goes off but still no power to the wheels. Again if I put it into drive I hear a loud grinding and screeching noise coming from the t case.

I put the switch to the 2Hi position and it just kept blinking and did not engage. I put the truck into neutral, and had a friend pull me with a tow strap in neutral while the switch was on 2Hi. After about 30ft of moving forward I heard a giant clunk under my truck and the 4Hi light went out entirely. Put truck into drive and no grinding noise, and power was restored to the rear wheels.

Switched back to 4Hi and now have workin 4WD again with no grinding noise. Can freely switch back and forth to 2Hi and 4Hi, havent tried 4Lo since it happened cause it was the cause of the problem.

Scary to have happen to you

Yeah I wasnt clear enough, I had it in neutral when changing 4x4 modes. I was periodically putting it into park to get out of the truck to look for problems and periodically putting it into drive to see if I regained power at all.

Had this happen on my gen 2. shifted everything to neutral and turned the truck off. let it sit off for a couple minutes then restarted. Then everything worked fine again like nothing was ever wrong. Never had the problem again. Happened when the truck was tilted way down on the passenger side and much more at the rear end compared to the front.

Sounds like something failed in the tcase. Was a mistake to start driving while it was attempting to go into 4lo. Surprised that it eventually tried while you were moving though.

MY hatred for Jeep.... I posted a thread about it in the third gen section because my 3rd gen Tacoma had to tow that POS all the way back to civilization. Then we waited like 5 hours for a tow truck, then paid $200 (on top of jeep roadside assistance because we were too far out and Jeep was too cheap to cover the difference), THEN it sat a dealership for 26 days while they tried to figure out what was even wrong with it. First they said bad PCM, replaced it same problem, then they sat on their ass for two weeks until a corporate Jeep engineer came out and turns out it was a bad PCM after all (I guess two bad ones in a row). Finally got the jeep back 3 days before it could be filed for lemon law -_-

I'll certainly never take it offroading alone, I'll only go if a Toyota is there for backup now lol.

It left me enraged because I've NEVER been actually stranded, maybe I'm just lucky but I think its because I've always offroaded in Tacomas, 4Runners and Landcruisers. 15 years of offroading, 5 different rigs most of them with over 100k+ miles, and I've NEVER been stranded before this. I've been stuck and taken hours to get out, I've fucked shit up and had to limp home... but I've never been straight just stranded in the middle of no where until this BRAND NEW 2017 Jeep wrangler with only 6k miles on it decided to take a shit on me 200 miles from home and 10 miles from the nearest road.

We weren't even doing anything stupid we were just camping and exploring when it just... died.

I'm more pissed off than I should be and wish I could say I'll get over it but I'm obviously taking it more personally than I should lol

Seems to be a constant theme here on TW, a guy will start a thread about being stuck somewhere and needing help or advice, then once he starts getting replies he's never heard from again. At least have the courtesy to respond back and let everyone know your good.

My 4Lo has been broken for a long time. T-Case just simply wont go into 4Lo mode for some reason, common issue I hear if you dont use it very often, gears seize or become stuck. I was hoping just letting it sit in 4Lo while driving would maybe bump something around in the T-Case and engage it magically. Which funny enough, is actually what ended up happening. It randomly switched from 4Hi to 4Lo out of nowhere while going about 10km/h through a field. But thats when I had complete failure of the case and zero power to the wheels. Which is kinda worrying when youre in 2ft of snow and a ways away from any road

You do realize that is a 12,000ft peak that is buried in snow this time of year right ? They are skiing from the observatory right now...

Unknown lift, maybe 2" I don't know how to ID it, and would rather set it back to stock.
13.6K' plus peak. Never been to the top, but I've been up it to only about 9K. And yes, it's cold up there, just as you would expect of something that high above sea level. Currently not an active volcano like Kilauea is.

Something tells me we're not going to hear back from OP.
