He had too much torque, that was the problem.

Once you got in so deep it probably didn't matter. But lo range just makes it worse when you start spinning tires. HI range and even starting in 2nd gear will reduce wheel spin and help prevent you from getting buried. Of course doing so for long periods of time will over heat the transmission.

Any time you're having trouble getting moving from a stop because of wheel spin go to hi range, 2nd gear just long enough to get moving. Works well in sand, wet grass, snow and ice. Lightly applying the parking brake will often stop the wheel off the ground from spinning and send power to the one on the other side of the axle too.

I wonder if MTS or Crawl control would have gotten it out. I might try CC in the deep sand the next time I'm at the beach.:)

12psi is what I ran at Pismo.
I went just about everywhere in 2wd.
    Good tires help as well.

could have used the poor mans locker, press the parking brake in slightly to give the diff some resistance.

obviously you wouldn’t want to drive any distance like that, but it will get you out of a hole.

And like an earlier poster said, ALWAYS carry a shovel. I keep on in the back of my truck at all times.
Years ago, I buried one of my dad's work trucks in the snow. After about 30 minutes of digging with a buddy that was with me, we just drove out. I've carried one ever since.

Could no one have pulled you out? Good to keep a snatch strap or something handy if you're going to wheel.

#1 rule when driving in the sand, if the tires were aired down enough, you wouldn’t have gotten stuck in the first place

u could have done the 4LO mod so u would have traction control.

plus a shovel. traction boards. and low tire pressure would also be nice to have in addition to everything else

Don't you have to engage the LSD? I'm not 4WD so maybe it's different. But in my PreRunner I have to engage the LSD via a switch. It actually does a pretty damn good job for what it is.

I always ran 12 front, 10 back in the dunes with tubeless tires, I'd drop another 4 in front and 2 in the back with my tubed Tru Tracs.

In my truck I carry a standard long handled shovel, much better than some tiny short handled shovel when the digging gets serious.
