    This right here ^^^^

I've done all the other big tricks mentioned here over the years, but a Mazda 626 v6 had me whipped once, no room to work any of the old fashioned stuff, including the screwdriver/hammer combo.

Picked up that Lisle, mated it to an extension and a 12" ratchet and the filter squealed Uncle.

I gave away all my other 'filter tool' collection about a year after that. They never got used again.

You have to remove it to drain it and clean it before reinstalling it.

Why would you leave dirty oil in the filter when doing an oil change? :p

hell, I knew that old guy would change his oil filter once a year, and would always give you a roll of toilet paper for his "extra" filter no matter how much you explained and no matter how much black oil you showed him never mattered. but he always would bitch and moan then sign the waver and after a while id even try to attempt and he would say "just give me the damn form, I'm not replacing shit yet."

All above - Great Advice ! Doesn't burn your butt when you take your car in for an oil change and they wind up Tightening the filter to the nth degree ! That's why I try to do most oil changes myself...Getting tougher however as I get older !

Your never too old to change your own oil bro :) install a Fumoto valve, you can just lay on your crawler, hook a hose to the Fumoto, drain old oil into a container, shut the valve. Change filter and refill oil.

15 minutes tops, no mess, no muss, no fuss, no cleanup :)

I just did my 2023 Tacoma first oil change. I know there's a lot of opinions on new engines, but I wanted to do the first oil change a little earlier than the scheduled 10k mark because... why not. A simple task shouldn't hurt. I asked Toyota to do it, and they said why bother, there's no point. When I let the oil drain, that was black AF, so I'm glad I decided to do it. However, the oil filter was the most difficult fucking filter I've ever removed. I have a strap wrench, which ended up just denting and warping the filter. I then tried to use an oil filter wrench (cheaper one as Motiv was sold out of the size I needed). Since the filter was slightly warped, this would not work either. I use a channel lock styled one, which only pierced a hole and leaked oil on my head. lol There just isn't enough room in there to get that to work... I tried drilling a hole in the side to jam a screwdriver in. Still just not enough space or leverage to jam it through both sides or hammer it through.... I finally used the 3 prong one that was highly recommended in this thread. I can't say how much i love that thing now that i've used it.

Another random note. I have the 2023 2.7l (4 cylinder) motor. The oil filter that I took off was the 90915-20005. However, the new filter I purchased from the toyota dealer was the 90915-YZZD1 which seems to match all searches online. It seems like the YZZD1 has replaced the 20005, but my curiosity has been piqued.

Drill a small hole then take a screw driver or similar and it will come off easy peasy

Tried that. my drill hole is prominent in the pic as well. :) There's just so little space to work with there...

holy hell what happened to the top lol

If you drill it at an angle (doesn’t have to go all the way thru) you can fit an screw driver or a socket extension in it all you need is it for it to move a millimeter to break it loose

Haha a combination of using the plier style tool, and the strap wrench... sigh. i couldn't get a big enough screwdriver in there tbh. I had a small one, but it was too thin and was bending.. This was a fun oil change. lmao
