This is why I bought the Duratracs for my OEM rims. Happily sold off my dedicated winters that came with the truck, and now I don't have to change out my tires twice a year. Great winter tire and summer tire.

    Still in planning phase ...
Prior to my Tacoma ownership I had a 2003 Ford Escape XLT. Ran Cooper Discovery AT3's since 2011 living in MT and driving to NV, UT, and the last couple of years driving between MT and ND to work in the oil fields. Never worried about snow or terrain with a GOOD set of QUALITY AS/AT tires. Never considered the need for studded snow tires.

I live up in Vail and the Nokian Hakapelitta's (without studs) have worked for me for the last five years. Up and down 70 with no problems! Even the wife thinks that they are great for her runs to Denver. Yes they are expensive but in my opinion well worth it.

This is interesting to read about. I jumped in my pool today after cutting the grass with no shirt on. We have no snow. No “winter gas” and no studded tires. But like I said, very interesting to read about. (I’m in Louisiana) Also gas is $2/gallon.
Good luck to you all and keep it between the lines!!

Truth, I lived in Ottawa for many years before moving back to the US and I can attest Ottawa winters were pretty bad! Good snows on a taco with no studs are fine!

I have a Scion TC with a set of Hakkapliittas. I've actually tried to get it stuck in the snow, and it always gets out. With 4WD and Hakkapliittas, you'd have to be high centered on the frame to get stuck.

I would bet that decent snow tires would get you anywhere you need to go.
