Hahaha when i really dont want to. It was raining pretty hard today and my mom was driving my truck and she was all nervous and said hey i can flip it into 4WD and i told her not to on the pavement and we didn't. Does that help?

You can turn it on with wet pavement. Just try not to do any 3 point turns in it.

dont get shit twisted, that i not what i said.

My main point was, 4wd is not something to be worried about on wet pavement. YES you wont have full range of motion (turning) but you can drive on pavement in 4wd and you can turn. YES it is true 4wd is not 4 wheel stop, and if your hydroplaning its not going to help you.

I think if you're already in the middle of a hydroplane there's nothing that's gonna save you except for trying to gain control of the vehicle back regardless of 4x4 or not.

I see what 2kool4school is saying...he wasn't talking about extremes like going 100mph on 4x4 on wet roads.

Actually if you engine brake it is 4Wstop.

And no, you should never have 4WD on dry pavement unless you're driving in a straight line.

Drive line bind is drive line bind. Little or a lot it's still binding and weaking the transfer case.

Unless you have Full time 4WD (Think Jeep Grand Cherokee with Quadra Trac or Quadra Drive) you have no reason to be in 4WD.

Unless your name is SuperWirty and you're kicking out the jams with a 4Hi Launch baby.

How did you come to the conclusion that it's ok to use 4wd on dry pavement from that??

There shouldn't really be a debate on this... If you people who think it does no damage to your truck using 4wd on dry pavement, go for it... just don't complain when something finally does break. If it's raining hard enough to where you think you need 4wd, you should probably just slow down so your tires can actually disperse the water rather than attempt to compensate with 4wd.

I am still driving in 4H in the rain and nothing broken yet... but our trucks will break even if we never use 4 wheel drive. Your point is it will break faster. The main point being you guys make it sould like in 1000 miles or less you will break something using it in 4H in the rain. This is not true. The difference is negligible if you re not doing 3 points turns.

And get it straight... I do UP TO 80 in the rain, not 100. And I use 4H to help accelerating and changing direction uder wet conditions. I get MUCH less intervention from my trucks computer because the wheels are not spinning due to reduced traction and my ass end is not swinging out.

4H in the rain wont harm your truck (well not immediately). Toyota says it is OK. Its helps in the rain for handling and decreases the chances of your losing control. No it wont help if all 4 wheels hydroplane but it will help if they are not all hydroplaning.

Lots of people use 4H in the rain with no breakage. Its not ideal like AWD but it works. If you are concerned about things breaking dont go offroad... its very hard on your truck.

I can see that... but if I lived in a place that it rains on a regular basis, I'd want a center diff like a 4runner.

Wow... have any of you tried to drive in a circle, park, whatever... in H4 on dry pavement?

It is very hard, so why would you want to? Even in dirt when trying to turn tight into spots, I have put in in H2 because there wasn't enough 'slipping' going on between the front and rear tires.

So, it is just silly to fight the steering wheel to turn your truck in 4WD on dry pavement... the binding may not break anything, but it sure seems that it is hard on the components... why would you on purpose force your truck to work hard?

Do you drive 60 mph in 1st or 2nd gear?

Then do not drive a PART TIME 4WD on DRY PAVEMENT for normal use... as there is no need what-so-ever. When it rains, snows okay

Exception: you are going straight only... to 'lube the parts' is maybe an exception. I don't think going straight will hurt it... otherwiseToyota would do a better warning! It is sad that you have a 4WD and can only find straight pavement to use it, however!

I use it on the free way in mostly straight lines below 90kph to lubricate from time to time. I never really operate it when i'm slow and turning.

    I should be fine :p

..or you could take off the rear drive shaft and throw it in 4wd and drive on pavement.

That was how my old Subaru's worked.. Front Wheel Drive to 4 Wheel Drive (FWD/ 4WD on the shifter). A great idea for pickups when the bed is empty as all the weight is over the front end! Wish we had the choices FWD, RWD, 4WD!

I had to do it in my cherokee once. I was getting a custom rear driveshaft made and it was my DD so I sported front wheel drive for a few days lol.

No, not mine... I am talking about BEFORE they went AWD and were 4WD... My first two had high range only, and my third had low range... was great... (1977-1987 models).

So say for example one were to actually put the truck into 4hi or 4lo once or twice on dry pavement and make a couple tight turns (okay, I admit I did it, but only very briefly just to get familiar with the controls since I'm a 4x4 noob)...how much potential damage could that cause? Resistance/binding was obviously experienced, but no horrible sounds were heard (clunks, pops, etc.) that would indicate breakage.

I just want to gauge whether it is an immediate grenade to my drive line which requires some inspection, or if I can rest easy and just know to never do it again?
