Wild, I figured it was the parking brake. I've seen this same kind of setup, but being used for a parking brake on CAT 735 artics. I guess that makes allot more sense to use it as an actual break on something that light.

Those type of axles are used on rock crawlers and other trucks since you only have to do 1 brake per axle if you use them on front and rear. Plus, the gear reduction built into the axle makes braking on the output shaft more effective than at the wheel. So you get more powerful brakes AND less maintenance.

Xtreme4x4 episode. :D They used them on their cheap jeep or something like that I think. Stopping a slower spinning output shaft is easier that stopping a faster spinning 35+ mud tire. So lots of people use those types of axles for off road vehicles apparently.

you got it a little backwards. The output shaft will be spinning faster than the tire. :)

I thought there were gears in there that make the axles spin faster than the drive shafts? So the second drive shaft (or in this case, output shaft) would be spinning slower than the tires so the brake can apply more torque to slow the vehicle.

Nope. The input and output shafts move at the same rpm the drive shaft spins out of the transmission. The gearing is similar to a normal axel. I think the axel you are thinking of is one in which a PTO comes out of the differential, so as to opperate an acsesory while the vehicle is moveing. Its more of an agricultural axel, and I cant remember what manufacture.

Maybe I'm thinking of the ones Xtreme 4x4 used. Seems like those had gears inside the axle so the input/output shafts spun slower than the shafts going to the wheels. I know that they had some super low gears for rock crawling. So they used the disc brake on the output shaft as it would apply more braking force than discs at the wheels.... It's been a while since I saw that episode, and can't find a run down anywhere of what they did and why.

Ok. I saw that episode, and it was a Rockwell axel. BUT, if the in/output shafts were to spin SLOWER than the axel shafts, it would be an overdriven ratio. A 4 to 1 ratio, would mean that every 1 time the wheels turn, the in/output shaft spins 4 times, thus being faster spinning than the wheels. If that were reversed and the wheels rotated faster than the in/output shafts, 4 tire rotations would equal 1 driveshaft rev, and it would require MAJOR torque to get the vehicle moveing. Its New Years and Im on on 3 hours of sleep, so tieing my shoes is a difficult chore right now, so I may be WAY off what you are trying to convey.

*shrug* I don't really know either... lol I don't pay attention to gear ratios. I just remember then saying something about why they did it that way.... Maybe they had an extra transfer case or something? Seems like they did something with the gears in the axles too, but.....
