    Why are Body Lifts a bad idea?

    I'm not planning on doing one, I'm just curious why so many people seem to hate them.

    Body lifts are for posers. The only thing they do is allow a little bigger tire, but the chassis ground clearance gains nothing except what said tires give you. And if you don't adjust the bumpers afterward, they look disproportionate

    I wouldn't necessarily say they're for posers. There are a couple guys on here that have them to get bigger tires when their suspension options are maxed out. I see them more as a safety issue, you put a 3" spacer between the body and frame an there's going to be a lot of stress on those mounting bolts, especially in an accident.

    I can't agree enough about the additional stress on the bolts. This is my #1 reason against them

    Interesting perspective. But why not just suspension? Isn't that where you'll get all the articulation, anyway?:popcorn:

    Don't you get more engine/tranny/frame clearance with the suspension? I know your axels can only go as high as your tires.

    I agree. If the chassis is high enough, having just the axles dragging through the soup isn't going to slow you down much. Not like getting the frame high centered will!

    I don't see anything wrong with a 1" body lift, or 2" max... but it should be as a minor supplement to a suspension lift. The suspension lift is where you get most of your gains and benefits while the body lift might get you a little bigger tire. Body lifts over 2" usually look like shit and once you get above 2" the danger/failure factor increases quite a bit.

    I think that's about the only real difference between body/suspension. Body's cool if you're just going to mall crawl. But if you plan on actually doing anything with your truck might as well do the suspension.

    Stonewall is the fattest 5 lug slug ever
    I don't hate body lifts, but it puts a lot of strain on the mounting bolts, and sometimes, your bumpers will look a bit off.

    Body lifts are ok if they are kept around an inch, I have one on my CJ5 that I am resto-modding along with a 3 inch suspension lift, works great. Plus the added bonus is getting better bushings than factory.

    As long as the bolts are stronger, bushings are better and spacers are top notch then go for it.

    I actually had a 1" body lift on my jeep and that was because we needed that 1" to clear the fenders at full stuff (w/35's) and the fact I installed Ford shock towers. Or else I would've chewed up some expensive meat.....That's the extent of my body lift exposure - and I wouldn't do it for anything else.

    I knew a guy I worked with....had a 3" body lift on a jeep. Had a panic stop and the entire body slid off the body pucks/busted the bolts.

    And the larger body lifts look like crap.....

    Now, back on topic.

    OP, one of the main reason people hate BL's is as mentioned before, unsightly gaps between the frame and the body, necessitating the usage of gap panels. And needing to relocate the bumpers. This usually only happens when you go above a 2" BL. In moderation BL's serve a purpose of adding a little extra lift to an already good suspension lift with little added expense
