If I put it in S mode, I can see the gears down in the lower left hand of the display, but in D it just shows "D".

    Any ideas?

Yeah I know what you want. Don't shift, it'll tell you what gear you're in once you put it in sport mode

If I remember correctly, putting it in sport mode automatically puts it into 4th gear?

Count your gear shifts? I don't think there's any other way. I generally know which gear I'm in while it's in D

It's stupid that sport mode doesn't keep current gear.

That really true?? Aside from counting your shifts maybe scangauge will tell you. Just leave connected while driving?

Nope it only limits how high the computer can make it shift. Called a limiter not a shifter. If you want to shift yourself then shift between 3000 and 5000 rpms, auto shifts it at around 2000

This, I believe shifts limiter limits the highest gear, S4 limits the trans to 4th gear, no higher.
Also curious but probably a function of speed vs. rpm's is the only way to tell what gear the trans is in.

The truck will typically not hold gear the second you lift off the gas. The computer tells it to shift to the highest gear possible related to speed and possible current rpm's
At 40 it will shift into 4th once gas pedal is released and approximately 47 to 50th will shift into 5th. That's what when you get back into the gas it feels sluggish. It just wants to try to maintain appoximate current speed, hence the huge down shift to gain significant speed again.

It does right at first put you into 4th gear. Just bump it up twice to get it into 6th gear. Then it will shift to any gear needed, both up and down just like in D. When you stop, it will downshift into 1st. When you take off, it will go through all the gears just like it does in drive or D.

Also, once you first put in in S and it shifts into 4th gear, it will shift automatically from 1st to 4th as needed. When you first put in it S and let's say you drop it to 3rd gear, it will shift as needed though 1st to 3rd. It won't go out of 3rd unless you bump it into a higher gear. But once you in the next higher gear it will now shift through all gears as needed from first to whatever gear you bumped it to when you first put it in S. Hope that makes sense.

For me it is VERY hard to tell what gear it is in in D. This is because there is 4th , 4th with locked convertor / 5th / 5th with locked convertor , and 6th , and 6th with locked convertor. All have different RPMs, and may overlap .
Edit , at least this is the way I understand it .

That's not what I meant. I meant if I'm in 5th it should hold 5th not auto to 4th
