I cant find any threads that show how to do this. I want to replace the JBL tweeters to something that might sound better, plug and play. Has anyone figured out a way to plug the Subaru tweeters into the JBL harness?

Unfortunately the only option for JBL is complete replacement including added amp and new sub. A lot of people recommend a brand called oem audio plus to retain the stock headunit, but it’s over $3k

You dont need to replace everything for a JBL system.

Buy a set of JBL club 322f speakers, Several people with JBL systems have swapped out the stock for these. You will need to trim a little bit, but they fit. Then just adapt the wire harness to the new speakers (easy to do) and your all done.

I found the Subaru tweeters to be both lower in construction quality and provided negligible sound improvement. Non-JBL system.

They are few and far between, but its also a fairly recent thing that people are just swapping out the speakers and leaving everything else. Awhile ago there was no real option, but I started pointing out to people that JBL and Infinity offer 3 ohm speakers that will swap right into the JBL trucks.

Appreciate the info! I’ll find some threads. Do you have personal experience with the replacements by chance?

Not on a tacoma, but a rav4 with JBL. But I have advised on several JBL builds and the people have been very happy with the results.

But the JBL system uses 2 ohm speakers, most car speakers are 4 ohms. Putting a 4 ohm speaker into a system designed for 2 ohms gives less than good results. 3 ohms is good enough.

Then the way JBL did the system in these trucks, you have a 8 channel amp in the back, it sends sound to each individual speaker (4 front, 2 rear, dual voice coil for sub) The amp has built in crossovers to supply the correct range to the factory speakers, the stock dash speakers being a 2 inch can handle mid-high range frequencies, so a 3.5 inch coaxial speaker is the perfect replacement. It can handle the lower freq and has its own crossover to send the high to the built in tweeter.

Interesting... Definitely excited at the prospect of not having to rip apart the whole truck for the oem+! I have some reading to do. Thanks again!

Replacing JBL Tweeter/Mid in 3rd gen TACO with JBL system

Hi all: This is my first serious post. There are many related threads regarding this topic.

I got my new TACO in November ..love the truck but the so called premium audio system (aka JBL) is worse than terrible. After reading just about every thread, and other sites, this is my story.

I was not happy with the screeching effect of the tweeters—seemed too loud and I could not control them enuf with the factory mid and tweeter controls in the head unit. I removed the OEM speakers and observed that there was NO Cross-over Capacitor. ( I read somewhere that the capacitor was an integral part of the speaker…seems a bit unorthodox.) This may be the root of the issue, but with this crazy JBL set up who knows.

I replaced the OEM tweeters with the Kicker tweeters 47KSC2704. They are a 4 ohm speaker and the folks at Crutchfield said that I’d hear a reduction in amplitude using these. This was what I wanted, so good! I installed the speakers using a harness I found at Harness House part number 4499, using the Tacoma end of the harness (connector was grey), making a pigtail. They are about 10 inches long they mated perfectly with the TACO 3rd gen factory JBL harness---obvious benefits. The factory harness is VERY short and trying to splice into it will be a challenge.

I used the Kicker provided capacitor 150 micro-farads connected to the positive side of the speaker and ensuring that I was connecting to the positive feed from the OEM harness. (I deduced that the positive side of the OEM speaker was on the right) They were an improvement but still too bright for my taste. Interestingly I noticed an improvement in bass response…..hmmm.

Second try. Even though there was some improvement, I still needed to reduce the tweeter’s amplitude. I added a 2 ohm (non-inductive) resistor in-series with the speaker. In effect making it a 6 ohm device. Since the impedance (resistance) increased; I had to adjusted the crossover capacitor to 80 micro-farads. (ref: https://soundcertified.com/speaker-crossover-calculator ). This is the diagram of the hook up:[IMG]

SUCCESS: Much better overall performance--- Tweeter/Mids much better behaved and the Bass is much better. PLUS the rear speakers are now louder … There must be something funky as to how the JBL unit processes the audio signal since the bass is better… an unexpected and welcomed results. This mod may not work for everyone…and will not make your truck should like your home system…but it’s now much improved in my view. Good luck.

Check out Harness House part # 4499. Also search "4499" you'll find my post on replacing JBL tweeters
