I used to have a '97 5 lug extracab. I had a 10" sub that I put under the passenger side rear seat. I had to cut a bit of material from the compartment opening, then made an mdf plate for the speaker, lined the inside of the compartment with sound insulation, then mounted the speaker/plate flush with the floor so you could still sit on the seat when folded down. The airspace in the compartment probably isn't ideal for a sealed box, but it sounded fine, and was unobtrusive since the seat was still usable, and looked 100% stock.

When I sold it, I was able to put the door back on, and because I didn't need to cut any of the carpet, you would never know I had a speaker there. I would have re-used it on my new truck, but I ended up with a doublecab.

That sounds pretty awesome! I used to be into huge space hogging stereos, but as I've gotten older I definitely like to minimize it much more. That's a great idea to do that!

have this under my driver seat with the stock speakers and it is an easy, cheap and worthwile upgrade for 115. for those who enjoy keeping the backseats empty, this works well! sound is better than the stock as well, and i run a sony deck

Yeah, back in highschool/early college, I had an Accord with a 12" sub in the back in a HUGE ported box.

The sub I had in my 5 lug I kept, and built a small box for it to fit behind the rear seat of my doublecab (had to remove the plastic cap on the back of the seat and cut out the liner on the back wall.

Again, probably not the best sounding setup, but with a moderately powered kenwood deck, stock speakers, and the 20 year old sub (yes, seriously), it sounded just fine. My amp recently crapped out, and I haven't replaced it yet. Mostly because I don't drive it every day any more so it (the sound, or lack thereof) doesn't bug me as much. I may just end up getting one of those self powered units that fit under the seat, to regain a little storage behind the seat.

I would happily settle for an "okay" $100 upgrade, but the questions for me would be where do you get power from the factory stereo, and how do you connect the sub-woofer?

I believe the sub has speaker level inputs do you can tap into the rear speakers for the musical signal. Then you just need your power and ground connections

I went straight to a aftermarket radio. so I can't comment on the factory radio. my aftermarket radio was about $125. it's a 4x50 which helps power the speakers, makes a difference for sure. and plugging in the sub is super easy.

my whole setup was under 500, which isn't too bad for a nice upgraded system IMO.
Kenwood Stereo, with wiring adaptor, $130
    (4) Rockford fosgate speakers, $90
    (2) Rockville 10in Subs with wiring, $120×2=$240
