I remember when being able to tune a four barrel carburetor made you the smartest guy in the room. :)

The ECU is unreadable. Doubtful it'll happen any time soon, if at all.

Agree. Mat said 0% chance unless TSB released.

It is only a monopoly because it took so long to reverse engineer and then tune to make it right. Being able to crack it is only part of the story.

The number of maps loaded into this ECU boggles the mind, let alone the relationships between them.

Beyond that, vF was the key for Magnuson to stop teasing the 3rd Gen S/C for over 3yrs. They had the excellent hardware that wasn't marketable without vF's work and software.

    Sincerely, good luck!

Has no one ever heard of ECUTools.eu? They've had a program that reads and backs up Toyota ECU's for a long time.
    https://ecutools.eu/chip-tuning/pcmflash/

    PCMFlash
"supports flashing both backup (vbf) and binary (bin) files. When flashing binary files checksum verification and correction is available for most of the modules. Conversion from VBF/GDS into BIN is supported if the ECU doesn’t support reading."

My experience successfully reverse engineering many things has been to intercept the communication between the software and hardware. CANBus sniffing is where I would start. .CUE files have the at least a write-key built into them, otherwise they would not be capable of flashing the ECU.

    ECU sniffing looks like this
    message ID: 620
    data: 10 80 FF FF 80 20 00 80

As fun as this stuff can be, I personally still support small-fry companies like VFTune because their hard work won't continue unless they can make money to justify the effort. Another reason to use VFTune's kit is to compare with your results from the above Russian toolsets.

Heard of it, but there's a lot more to it than just opening up a binary file and having access to all the maps and knowing their functions/purpose. You'll need things like a definition file for example (which doesn't exist for the 3GT). I also believe that each ECU ID is actually set up different. Register 5 may be the start of one array for 04B04, and register 30 may the the same array but in 04B33. Overly simplified, of course, to make it easier to understand for anyone who isn't familiar with processor architecture. In my opinion, the tools already exist, therefore it's not worth going through the hassle again. Especially because it has taken about 6 years to get where we are currently.

"matt" from ovtune is a child. I bought his tool and ran into problems and it ended in him crying like a baby and I eventually had to dispute the charge with my card. His "company" is nothing more than customer service that relays data between another company in Russia that did all the reverse engineering and provides him with each and every tune you purchase from him.

I moved on to ecutools.eu, bought pcmflash and have both read and written tune parameters in the ECU. I own 3 Tacomas and a TRD Pro tundra. I do ALL work myself and have installed a Magnuson SC on my 2020 Tacoma and an Eaton supercharger I bought from Harrop on my Tundra.

If you're serious about this stuff as I am, I suggest using tuningtools.com as their software does most of the heavy lifting for you with a few clicks. Pcmflash is a high-skill tool that requires you use hex editors, memory mapping tools, and can understand the layers and interdependent procedures implemented in the ECU/TCU.

There is only one package that is able to do a read (VR) and write and also has modification options via the editor. Bitsoftware Bitbox with Denso Petrol or Diesel module (depending on ECU and engine) that can do virtual read over OBD (original has to be located for editing)
After the original is located you can use their BitEDIT software with the corresponding Denso module for editing.

Big problem is that this is a Russian tool and due to international sanctions it is hard to obtain USB dongles.
You would also need a USB to OBD interface like Tactrix.
    USB dongle and BitBOX modules.

This program is designed to find passwords for programming Toyota and Lexus Gen2 ECUs (1.28/1.5/2.0Mb). The full version has many more features, but here we are talking about brute-force passwords. The purpose for getting the passwords is to be able to flash the "unreadable" ECU with a compatible BIN.
