Looking for suggestions as I make up a minimal recovery kit. All travel is on forest service dirt roads (no off-road). I want to be able to get myself or others out of a ditch is basically the bottom line. Would rather avoid a winch install.

If you don't want a winch and want less expensive, you're going to end up with tow strap(s), chains, and a come-along/HiLift.
@Blais03 beat me by a few seconds.

I strongly recommend a come-along over a hilift. Much safer to use and I would say it is easier too. not to mention it obviously takes of less space.

Hi Lift is still good to have to jack up the truck if you need to for whatever reason (flat tire for instance). Always have a spare, too...make sure it's the same size as your other tires and in good shape.

Recovery strap is a must....and not a tow strap with a metal hook...those are dangerous to use. A hitch receiver and some heavy duty shackles as well.

A good shovel, first aid kit, and always pack a gym bag with extra clothes in case you get stuck somewhere remote and have to stay the night. Food and water too, of course.

Air compressor, a decent tool kit (the number of people I see on trails that never bring any tools is mind boggling). Some mover's blankets since it sucks to have to crawl under and work on your truck in the rocks/dirt.

Spare nuts and bolts and maybe even some parts (like a spare CV axle) is good to have in case you break one in the middle of a trail that you need 4x4 to continue on.

If you have a winch bumper then a winch is really good to have, maybe a satellite phone if you like to venture off solo

If you get a come-along, be sure to get an old bath mat or something like that to toss over the line/cable when under tension.

I just roll up the bath mat and stuff it in one of the cubbies. Comes in handy if you need to crawl under the truck if it's wet/muddy.

    I'm all about mutli-purpose!

I don't have much more space in a 1st gen xtra cab...I store most of my recovery stuff in the bed.

A Hi Lift is useless as a jack if you don't have aftermarket bumpers and/or sliders like me.

The wheel lift attachment works well, had to use it on friend’s trucks before. Lift them up, stack rocks or traction boards and repeat.

Also if you have a hitch, you can use a Hi-Lift there to lift the rear of the truck at least.

It works the same way. Lift the tire off the ground, stack whatever you need under the axle, drop the jack and change the tire.
