I have a 1998 Tacoma 4WD, regular cab that I'm going to put on the market. I have no idea how to price the vehicle, given that many in the same "age group" have been modified. Any suggestions from the crowd? The details are:
    • Original owner
    • '98 Tacoma, regular cab, 4WD, 4 cylinder engine
    • 158K miles
    • Not a commute vehicle .... primarily weekend road trips
    • Great shape, no dents or accidents of any kind
    • No rust (live in CA, Central Valley away from snow)
    • Manual transmission- 5sp.
    • Been driven pretty easy (still original clutch)
    • Completely stock
    • Not used as a wheeler

Hopefully you have major service documents/receipts to pass on to the buyer?

If you do, and the truck is truly a 'needs nothing' vehicle (meaning one could drive it for 10k or so with nothing but an oil change) I'd look it up on Edmunds and KBB, average the two private party prices and add $5k as a starting point. Whatever work it may need (lets say two tires, brakes and a coolant change) should be subtracted from that price. Or done in advance of listing.

Point is, proven 'needs nothing' will draw good money. Solid vehicle but 'needs work' has a smaller pool of buyers, all bargain hunters.

There should be a solid market for a vehicle like yours. But the book/online prices don't reflect that popularity real well.

You can always come down if it doesn't move, but you can never go up.

Clearwater Bill: Excellent points .... I appreciate the input. Other than a likely clutch replacement within 5-10K, it doesn't really need anything, so I'll use your process for pricing on Craigslist. Thanks for your thoughts!

One last question .... what is considered the best venue for listing a vehicle for sale? Craigslist? I haven't sold a car since 1997, so I'm a bit out of the loop but am just about ready to list my 1998 Tacoma. Any thoughts?

Clearwater Bill has given some excellent advice! I believe you also need to take into consideration how long you want to hold onto the truck. Price it high, you may hold onto it for a while before it sells. Price it around market and you should sell it fast. Also, Look on craigslist for a similar truck and see how it is priced... Good Luck!

do you still have this truck and what are you pricing it at? I might be willing to fly out to Cali and drive it back to TX. We can't get 4x4 4cyl 5spds around here... :)
