Thanks. What’s the deal with the state inspection after fixing the truck to have a branded title? Easy if you’ve actually fixed it?

I'd buy it back and fix it. can't even tell mine was wrecked... and drives perfect with 80k miles, and i think it was worse than yours looks. Only thing different with mine is its a trd off road and rebuilder put a trd sport hood on it, which i like fine.

Thanks for the info/suggestion. Feeling that keeping it may be more viable a solution than I was thinking

not sure was already rebuilt and titled from California when i bought it and brought back to oregon... had no problem getting titled in oregon. actually both trucks i have now have branded titles, I know it freaks a lot of people out, but I crawl all around them and make sure its put together well and drives well.. no big deal for me, and i saved a lot of money, and they both look great, and I don't plan on selling for a long time. I enjoy the tacoma, which is kind of a rare model, its a rugged trails model that i'm bringing back to bone stock... except the hood, ha

I bought the tacoma in Sacramento, can't remember his name, but he did excellent work... all stock parts and was missing nothing... no wrinkled panels, and everything works like new. it was hit in the front also, but never hurt the frame, only problem is my wife never lest me drive it (seriously ) and definitely won't let anyone take it off road, which is sad

thanks for the info, doesn’t sounds bad to me at all. I’ve seen these trucks from the 80’s- recent years going for about the same prices private sale. Pretty wild.

I know my truck well enough to know what it has going for it if and not. So I’ll have to consider that as well. If I fixed and kept it My main concern was collision coverage but it sounds like you’ve been able to get that with both trucks? despite having a branded title?

Rugged trail is a cool find! I wouldn’t mind the sport hood either not too much of a fan of the nonfunctional hood scoop. Does look cool though ha

I would recommend precision auto body in Beaverton. They did really good work when my parents had to use them I think it must have been like 15 years ago now.

I used courtesy auto body in Beaverton to paint a bumper for my last car. They did a great job and were extremely reasonable. This must have been in 2015 or so.

Not sure how helpful this is, moved out of the area a while ago but thought I'd maybe give you somewhere to start.

I fixed mine myself for the most part. I had a guy do the welding but other than that I took off the broken parts and put on new parts. You'll save a lot of money, maybe over half, by doing it yourself. My truck was much worse than yours and I spent 10K.

Between Youtube, TW Forum and Harbor Freight you got this!

The market place here is a great place to get used parts.

Some Toyota dealers give better discounts than others. I look for a dealer close to me that gives a 28% off and free shipping. Recently Toyota did a 25% black Friday sale which was on top of the dealer discount and the free shipping.

Biggest pain was some parts were back ordered and it took 5 months to get my hood with a scoop.

    Good Luck!

Thanks a lot I appreciate the encouragement and information! I’ve heard of and experienced pretty long parts delays glad you got the hood you wanted!

Ive never had any issue with getting collision and comp coverage on rebuilt title drift cars. I’d shop around and see who would be willing to cover it.

Ran into a guy years ago who bought his nice Taco for 8500 he said because of what looked like a light hit to the side requiring cheap bedside replacement to fix.

that is a deal I’m jealous of. An ideal world price for the metal, not price set by market. And leaving money on the table for necessary mods.

I just don’t know what your insurance will price the truck at in terms of what they’d want for it, for you to get it back. Then do with what you wish.

you could part it out. Rebuild. Or then sell it to someone. It could take minimal work to get it okay driveable even if it’s not perfect.

some tire scrub is acceptable. Right now in your case it’s extreme and probably wouldn’t drive or would shred a tire open quick.

if you want to buy it back you’ll have to be on top of it. It’s not common enough for them to present people that option every time without asking.

when I bought a vehicle back up to a certain period of days I don’t think I even had to pay storage fee, probably also due to the fact it wasn’t something I myself tried to store. They simply took it somewhere on their own accord. Not something I can be liable. I believe according to them a local inspection place of theirs.

was a little bit different than more extreme wrecks where a random tow truck shows up out of nowhere to zoom off with it to their yard, to get a broken car out of the road and out of the way of traffic. I’m guessing in those cases local cops on scene (if there) might be the ones making the phone call to start that. Or tow trucks listening in for reports of that.

better to be quick than long because long term storage can cost money and make the truck harder to find without it being touched by other folks excited to get their hands on it.

I’ve heard regular insurance typically tracks a limit on what they pay for a vehicle ever and that there’s room for only one totaling. Their goal is to total it.
Couple people said check other insurances. Sure. Might even be possible to get a re inspect after repair. Ie having it appraised for value and then in writing agreement that it will actually be insured.

if they’re looking at pay $10k once (for example) they’d rather do that than pay $10k twice = $20k, costlier

Thanks for the info. Finding out insurance price to buy it back will also have to be taken into consideration as you mention. I’ll do some research and see about future coverage. Sounds like there’s some hope left considering what some others have mentioned. Insurance not wanting to pay out the same damages also makes sense. There’s a lot to consider ha

Can someone explain why you lose your car when insurance pays you?

Surely you pay more on the chance they're gonna have to pay out. They're betting on the chance they won't have to pay out. But how do you lose possession if you win the bet?

    All stock, baby!
Because they are going to sell the car for scrap after paying you what is in theory its replacement value to minimize their losses.

Insurance companies get quotes on your car before they decide whether to repair it or not. The more money they can get for the car from a salvage yard or other party that wants to fix it themselves, the more likely they are to total it out, and the more it will cost you to buy the vehicle back. Selling it back to you for less than they would sell it to somebody else would be a foolish business practice.

It will be interesting to hear how much the insurance company offers the OP to let him buy it back. A Tacoma may be pretty valuable to a salvage yard, so the price might be higher than one would expect.

All my Toyotas from the last 25 years were totals.

I've never had trouble getting full coverage insurance.

I think the confusion is stemmed from loan pay off .

The insurance company won't insure the vehicle for what a clear titled vehicle would be insured for.

If they did, I could see peeps buying totals, fixing them, then wrecking them on purpose and getting a clear titled vehicle as a replacement.

If a car has a rebuilt title and you have it fully covered, the IC is only paying out 40-60% of the value, mostly less.

The IC already paid out the cars' value after the 1st wreck. They are not going to pay out on the second time it was totaled.
