So I'm going to make an offer on a 2018 today that comes with stock wheels and HT tires which I will be swapping out. This is a daily driver, but also my hunting rig which is FL swamp/mud/cattle ranch, but it's pancake flat so no climbing of any kind. In the summer months it's one wheel off the main roads and 2wd is history kind of swamp and mud. This is my first 4wd and my head is spinning after reading about all the fit considerations of various wheel/tire configs. I do not planning on adding anything else to the stock 2018 Off-Road other than wheels/tires and slapping a truck box in the back. My highway driving here in FL is pretty darn wet during summer as well and not having driven a Tacoma in these conditions with an AT tire I'd love to hear how any other folks who have similar conditions fared or just as important what to stay away from please. Thanks

265/75/16 AT tires should be good. That’s what I have at least . No lift. No rubbing. I have the duratrac c Rated not the e Rated which is heavy. While you’re at it, have the ecu ov tuned . I had mine at 2.0 and man, I do love driving my tacoma now more than ever.

Got it thanks. While we are at it mind sharing your thoughts on this one? Just saw it and looks like it might be ready for the dirt straight away, but not sure on the price. Would yank the bull bar and tonneau. I have looked for a gen 2 on and off for a year and finally opened up my search to gen 3....those gen 2's sell like hotcakes literally have to move that day or it's gone.

Wow. With that price, I’d just buy new

And it’s A 4 banger . Nothing against it, the 4 cylinder tacoma engine is bullet proof but it’s supposed to be lower priced than the v6 4wd. Toyota also was supposed to have fixed the weird shifting issues with the 2020/2021 Models. Anyway, a simple ovtune. FlasH on the ecu can fix it .

    EDIT
My bad. It’s a v6 not a 4 cylinder . My bad. But still I think price too high.

If you want to remain a member of TW you have to get SCS Ray 10's and either K02's or Wildpeaks. Sorry thems the rules.

On a serious note. The cost of buying used is why I just went with new. As for wheels and tires I would keep the stock wheels. Tires are a bit more tricky and depends on how much on vs off road you do. A mud terrain tire would be best off road but noisy with less wet traction on road.
Check with a local 4wd shop and see what they recommend for your area. That said the Wildepeaks and K02's are very good all round tires, hence why they are so popular here.

Wheels - I'm partial to SCS wheels. I went with Stealth 6's though, not the Ray 10s.
Tires - I've had the Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws on my Jeep, they were fine but wanted to try something different this time around. Went with the Duratracs and I like them, they're good in the rain and snow and have pretty good highway manners (didn't notice a drop in mpg and don't notice if they're loud or not as I'm always listening to something). They also have a more aggressive sidewall (imo) than the Wildpeaks which is always a plus in my book.

As for truck, if you can find a good deal on used snag it. I got my truck back in November for 39k OTD, had 17k miles on it. I was planning on buying a new 2021 with the exact same options this one came with and I was looking at 51k OTD (this is MSRP so minus any dealer incentives that might be going on). The only real difference is the color, Army Green is my favorite color in the Tacos, Cav Blue is my second so it didn't turn out so bad. I guess my point is, if you can save a significant amount of cash and the used one is what you want go for it - the money saved on the actual truck can then be spent on other things! (at least this is what I did).

Check out Nitto Ridge Grapplers, they provide a great blend of off road traction when needed with excellent on road manners IMO. I have 265/70R17 SL rated (43 LBS) with TRD SEMA wheels on mine and love them. I have owned several sets of Nitto tires on different vehicles over the years and have always been impressed by them. Wildpeak at3w is a great tire also, ran those on a previous vehicle and never had an issue.

I have the the Wildpeak AT3Ws on my Taco, and the new Toyo Open Country AT3s on my 4runner. They are both great tires, but I like the Toyos more. The tread is a little more aggressive but they still do awesome on the highway.. quiet and smooth ride. You’d be happy with either of them though. Both of my sets are C rated (I hate Es on a mid size truck, way too stiff).

Can’t personally speak to 2018 but came across this article today from “carmd.com” listing the 2018 Tacoma as most reliable pickup least likely to have a check engine light come on. Actually 3 different year models of 3rd gen Tacoma made the list. Not sure what that’s worth to you but I at least found it interesting.

Thanks appreciate it. It's funny there are 2 Tacos I'm looking at. The 2018 above that would be $26,200 out the door.....or a 2015 with 110k that would be $25ish out the door......and I'm leaning on the 2015 b/c I don't care for how the Gen 3's look. Given my experience with Toyota 110k doesn't scare me just gotta look at the 2015 in person.

2015 looks clean. You have to go with whichever you are most comfortable with. I bought mine brand new this summer simply because at the time there really wasn't a massive price difference between new and used so I figured "why not?". Good luck with the search/ purchase... can't go wrong either way with a Tacoma.
