I nominate Max for Trail Leader. He knows a lot of trails around here and posted a lot of good suggestions as to where we should go.

Naw, I don't want to step on anyones toes. I'll let OP do what he thinks is necessary. Let them August boys make their own thread.

We really need to just come up with a consensus on where we want to go. I just threw out some ideas.

FWIW looks like if we did run highrock canyon to onion resevoir we'd have to head back to the hwy near Denio then run down to winnemucca to fuel up and then back on 80.

Looks to be about 250 miles if we fill up in Gerlach and then again outside winnemucca. I'm not sure of the exact roads between the two either...

It'd be a hell of an adventure and one that I'd only want to undertake with about 10 spare gallons.

    Thoughts?

I'm down for either date. But again just need to know for sure, maybe start a thread with roll call and a planned route, etc? along with supplies needed?

As for myself I do have 2 5gal fuel cans, so 10gal spare I can cover.

Looking again maybe more like 200 miles give or take 20 haha.

Anyway I'd still plan on at least 5 extra gallons.

Also wondering on our time frame here. July 28th and 29th.

Are we setting out saturday morning or are you all going to end up driving up here sat morning and then we leave sat afternoon? Theres a decent place to camp close to gerlach if we want to camp friday night and leave saturday morning. We could camp saturday night at onion res and then everyone could drive home sunday?

Just wondering if maybe that route is too ambitious and too much for some people, and too little time coming from Cali? It'll probably be all day dirt driving off road gravel roads, some 4x4 required. We could skip onion or we could skip high rock if its all too much. Randy, will Chris' back be okay?

Or we could do something else entirely???

Here's some info for the nearest emergency medical services for the area:

    Pershing General Hospital
    855 6th St
    Lovelock, NV
    775) 273-2621

    Humboldt General Hospital
    118 E. Haskell St
    Winnemucca, NV
    775) 623-5222

Obviously it's closer to return to Reno/Sparks in the beginning, but once past Gerlach, Lovelock might be the better bet depending on injury/condition. I realize phone numbers in that area are about as useful as carrying a bucket of spare dirt, but you never know when someone might have a sat phone or get a crazy cell signal off a hilltop. 911 also works too.

I'd recommend someone map out routes to these spots from various points along the trail once y'all have finalized it. It's not difficult driving to get from A to B up there, but can be a bit confusing with criss-crossing dirt roads in the middle of BFE.

Exactly what I was getting at, we need to know who is coming and where we're going.

As for dates, I was thinking 3 day weekend, drive up Friday, meet late morning grab lunch and head out in the afternoon, to camp first night somewhere.

I'm thinking if something like that happens, well I do have a decent first aid kit. Decent is relative I suppose. I'm no EMT. I also have a HAM radio and so will others, so we'll skip the cells and go straight for the ham. If something is bad enough we'll get someone on the horn to get life flight out to us. I know a few routes between winnemucca and black rock and lovelock and black rock. I went to pershing county high school btw. smiley_abused_c7f775c02c9953a4175af00dc5782e648f041e8a.gif

All in all I want everyone to be safe and THINK and we'll avoid any sort of accident requiring professional care.

All my posts have been referring to July trip as that's what the OP said he wants to do.

I'd be down to go again in August but figure we'll need a different thread for that.

Yeah, I knew you were familiar with the area and remember you saying that you went to HS in Lovelylock. I'm just throwing this up there mainly for the more time-sensitive type issues like snake bite. After 20 yrs in search and rescue I think over-planning is in my DNA now!

It was suposed to be a 2-3 day trip. Maybe meet the CA gang at Boomtown Friday afternoon and camp at Hunter Lake and get an early start Saturday morning. Lets do it all. I hope so but you never know, but if Chris & I have to bail we bail.

I was thinking if everyone comes up friday afternoon/evening we could all meet at the frog ponds they're just 10 miles outside of gerlach on the east side of the playa. Then we can cut across the playa the next day to the west and head up that way. For those that want to meet sat morning just be there earlier enough to roll out with the group. ???

I did that last October, it was great. Started in the Black Rock, traveled all the way through Hawthorne then cut through to Bodie. Would love to do it again. I heard there is a great starting point just outside of Susanville, then heading east into NV.
