How long will this trail take, approximately? Is it worth bringing a cooler with food/snacks/beer?

    I have a HAM radio

yup I always bring my small cooler with beer and snacks, I usually pack a sandwich or pick one up at the gas station before we head out. Trail probably takes a few hours at most, more or less depending on how many stops we take for pics, snacks, beer, etc.

There's a real good stopping point with a great lookout next to a huge boulder overlooking Lake Arrowhead and the mountains below (I believe it's the big rock that Pilot Rock is named after). Good spot for a lunch/beer break.

It's past the point where the 'X' trail meets up with the regular trail so we could all stop there if people want

Just to give you guys a visual, both trails start at the '1' on this map.

The 'X' (more difficult trail) is the orange one.

The blue trail is the normal Pilot Rock trail.

You can see where the meet on the map, the lookout is around number 16

the green trail(s) are fire roads that take you down the mountain back toward the freeway

I believe the plan is to meet at 9am at the Chevron at Cajon Junction...the staging area for Pilot Rock is maybe another 20 minutes from there so I imagine we'd be at the staging area around 10am after hanging around the Chevron for a bit to meet everyone?

I saw that map, what's with the perfectly straight part of the X trail? Is that just a GPS goof?

There's a part of the trail that goes pretty straight for awhile, climbing a not so steep hill but it doesn't have much turns. Probably that part
