Sundown dual SD3/Hybrid Audio audio build Q & A

Hey Zac, did you get a template with your SD10s? Or do you happen to recall the cutout diameter or have that info handy anywhere? I'm about to start building an enclosure for one & just realized their website gives both 9.25 and 9.45 inches in 2 different places. Any idea which is correct?

mounting cut out is 9 1/4" for regular mounting.
The 10.5 is for flush mounting it but remember to still cut out the 9 1/4

 

Yeah, that's where I got the 2 different numbers (click on designs then measurements for the other one)

 

for non counter sunk the cut out is 9 1/4

 

Hrmm. This drawing, which is the other value I was referencing, makes it look like you need 9.45" or 240mm

 

I did 9.25" and cut it with a jigsaw. One cut came out nice and the other I had to sand a bit in a couple places. What material are you using to make your box?

I just did the math on the drawing and it's saying 9.44". I called sundown a few times and they can answer any questions you have.

I'm using MDF Zac. I'm not crazy about the quality of this stuff though. I think there will be another enclosure at some point, but I have enough cheesy carpet left to do this one. And it's kinda already built - just waiting for glue and a hole. I'm going to be on the hunt for some Baltic birch & someone better with a saw. Gawsh, I should probably drop Mr Marv a line. He might be able to throw together a quick knock-down kit.

 

I used birch for mine. 3/4" MDF is recommended for sub enclosures. Anything less is too weak... the real concern is will the magnet hit the back channel piece? I cut my hole pretty low because the magnet on these are very big!

Here are a couple images from when I had a solo baric l5. I cut a circle to see how it would fit. It did not fit because of how big i made the channel in the box. Obviously this was a terrible box...

 

Yeah, I'd never use thinner than 3/4 MDF. Especially on something like the SD10. I'd like to stop using it at all. I just need to find a local supplier.

 

I used Google maps and searched "wood working" and called a couple local store to check stock and prices.

Either way make sure you mount the box to the rear wall. Helps with the rattle and the sub sounds better when box doest move...

 

Yeah, it does seem to make a big difference if it's secure. I'm using the same mounting mechanism as before...have 2 enclosures I can rapid-swap now. Probably gonna be 3 before 2017

 

Just got off the phone with Sundown. The drawing is correct. The correct cutout diameter for the SD3 10 inch is 9.45" or 240mm.

Quick video of the sound with the DSP and a couple hours to learn and play with the sound processor.

The 1200w amp is currently on the way(1st one was defective), right now both subs are running about 300w rms each.

 

Ok so more tuning has been done. The gains for the highs have been dropped alot, the crossovers & slopes are set where they need to be, but still needs some more love. I will get a new video up with the same some to compare the difference to.

MDF? have you guys tried BB ply for subs yet?

I only exclusively use BB on all my installs.
1/2 BB works fantastic. I also simply cut a regular wooden dowl to size to brace the baffle to the rear. So easy
