Okay, so I bought a used 04 taco that came with a "factory" dealer-installed sunroof. It leaks, as all sunroofs do.... Yes I've cleaned the drains and everything. Still leaks. Headliner is shot in the truck due to the leaking. It makes a noise. Long story short.... I want to take the sunroof out.

How big of a job/dellima is this going to be?

Or would I be better off just putting some sealant on it, or maybe even some type of seal to keep the sunroof usable? If so, what type of sealant or seal to use?

    Thanks

update: siliconed the sunroof up. lost functionality, but it does not leak anymore, nor does it have the annoying whistling sound from the air coming in through the gap... would still like suggestions on how to seal and keep functionality

Subscribed, hoping an answer turns up. I'm having the same problem with what I think is a "factory" sunroof. You're doing better than me though, as I've sealed mine and it still leaks!

Looks like this isn't a very big problem.... is your sunroof just a pop up or does it completely slide back?

Would definitely do that if I could locate one.... I've tried a bunch of places, but maybe you could provide somewhere else to try?

Have you tried the dealer or maybe partsgeek to see if one is available for your model?

Find a compatible year truck in a wrecking yard.

Remove headliner from wreck and save. Cut a section out of the wreck roof bigger than the sunroof in your truck and take both home.

Remove your headliner and trash it. Remove your sunroof and trash it. Trim the patch panel to proper size for close fit. Install patch panel. While headliner is off, paint the patch, do cool wiring stuff, install heat reflective sound deadener. Install 'new' headliner assembly.

    Prep and paint the roof.

Enjoy your leak free, noise free top.

Ok, that doesn't answer your question, and I apologize for that. But it does give an alternative to consider if you get frustrated enough with the mess you have now.

Yeah I agree, I don't think the sunroofso are very common either. Mine is a pop up though. Only drips out of the driver side hinge, no where else. I've slilconed all over the area but the leak remains the exact same.

Try finding a place in your area that does custom sunroof installs. Let them take a look at it and they might be able to make a custom seal for it so no issues. Classic soft trim does a lot of custom sunroof installs. Looks like this company works with classic soft trim in Georgia..

gotcha... mine is a power one.... I siliconed everything up completely, including where the seal is against the metal.... idk if that might help. I also made sure I globbed a lot in the spot where the seal was missing. When I cleaned the drains out, I had very few issues with it leaking, although it did leak some. I decided to go with the silicone when I got splashed in the car wash :/ and figured out that it was going to be way more trouble and way more expensive than it was worth to delete the sunroof. Now, I have to get the headliner redone, and I will be bone-dry and brand new again.

But with yours being a pop-up I'm not sure if you have drains.
Might try the silicone again and make sure that every little spot where you think water MIGHT could possibly come in, is covered liberally. The more the better.

If I think about it, I'll take some pics tomorrow of my silicone job and ruined headliner. Be warned, it isn't the prettiest, but it does the job.

I'm still entertaining that option as my truck needs a few paint touch ups as is. Some previous owner had a bug deflector on(I guess) and it ate the paint off the hood at the very front. My cousin does body work on the side, so I don't think there will be any issue getting the job done... biggest obstacle yet is finding a wrecked one in a local yard and finding the time to set aside to get the sunroof removed.

But, thanks anyway! I will definitely keep this thread updated as time goes on and whether any nice changes come about.
