Hey everyone! I’m new to TW, but I’ve read many threads over the years when researching anything and everything that has to do with Tacos.

I figured this would be the place to get some good insight and expertise on the best way to transport my paddle board.

It’s a 10’6” all around SUP which I recently bought. I used to do lots of snow boarding at Big Bear, but once I moved to PR...well, I can’t find local snow :) I miss getting out on a board so I started researching something I could do almost anywhere and obviously SUP Boarding popped up.

I went out a few times and liked it so I bought a board.

My issue is that I don’t feel comfortable transporting it on a soft pad removable roof rack system if I want to go long distances and at the moment I can’t quite afford a nice system.

    Experts, I want your advice!

Welcome to TW. I have no advise as I’m in the same situation and hoping for some solutions. I have an RTT over the bed and a naked roof, 10’ board on a DCSB.....

    You have a couple options.

    1) If you have a topper, use the rack on top.
    2) if no topper, then you can purchase a bed rack (Thule xsporter, Trac one, cab height steel, etc.)
    3) Use Thule, Yakima or prinsu rack over cab to transport.

With all these options you'll want to put a barrier between the SUP and the rack, most people use pool noodles or foam.

The cheapest option would be to find a used bed rack on Craigslist or here

    Good luck

Search for used racks (Yakima or Thule).

Either of their websites will provide details on what fit kit you will need to mount to your vehicle and the necessary attachments for a SUP.

I have a camper shell, so I just strap my SUP on top of the bars.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Thule makes a bed rack in addition to roof racks. Yakima only makes roof racks as far as I know.

I’ll have to do some research and see which would be easiest for me with regards to loading and unloading and securing for longer distances

x2. The easiest route would be a hitch mounted bed extender and lay the sup flat and strap it down using the bed drings. I highly recommend buying a few more d-rings and make a few more tie down points in the bed. There's a recent d-ring post and I've done this recently to my bed. You can also transport it via roof rack just like what you would do with a kayak using J-hooks carrier or even flat on the rack w/o a carrier. Always use a front/rear bow-stern tie downs and like stated by whiskeyTaco, use foam noodles to give some protective cushing to prevent warping your SUP at pressure tie down points.

I ride with the tailgate down and strap the 10ft SUP to the d rings. I also have a tonneau cover that i close on top of it.

I have a 11'6'' SUP and a DCLB. I just put it in the bed with a cut of a foam noodle protecting the nose and the another noodle cut to slot into the top of the tailgate where the board is laying down on. After that I strap it down. Driven quite a ways like this without an issue.

Are there any front/rear bow-stern tie downs you recommend?

What anchor points do you use to strap it down?
