wouldn't using a coil spring retainer clip instead of welding (and compromising the strength of the coil) have been safe?

"free is good" but 20 bucks isn't bad either

That's the main concern here right? that the coil itself will break due to the weld?

Yes looking back that would have been safer and easier prolly, i would have just had to get longer u bolts too. I just get a full nut as is (insert inappropriate comment here)

you can see how i did it on my truck here:

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-tacomas/245837-zuk-mod-tacomas.html#post5909469

Honestly I loved them, every one hates because they have never seen it before. Its not a bad idea, yes there are better options out there but not everyone on tacomaworld is made of money. I ran the ZUK coil setup for about year, put about 10,000 miles on the springs and never had a problem. Loved the ride and increased load capacity, SO MUCH BETTER than the blocks I had before.

Obviously if your out flexing your Taco on the trail every weekend it's not a good idea. But for my work truck it was perfect

I only know those exist from switching out the cut springs in the rear of my 64 el camino. I wasn't happy that when I jacked the car up the springs just fell out

You could rock coilovers in the rear with less effort, although it wouldn't be free, and would probably ride very rough.
