If do regular maintenance on ICE off roader, engine not suppose to crap out. But you can buy reman engine, or find use motor someplace. Still cheaper than EV battery.

What about upgrading to a supercharged 2nd gen? I cruise up I-70 to the tunnel in 5th/overdrive with the torque converter locked at 1800rpm... Perfect for your uses - Vagabond Drifter camper, RakAttach swingout, 1up super duty 2-bike rack included… Come on by to check it out, I'm near City Park in Denver.

You'll have a lot of budget left over to do a vinyl wrap in Voodoo blue as well as supplemental performance mods if you wish.

I have yotawerx Stryker tune but still on stock gears and running 265/75 r 16s. King 2.5s with resis and adjusters, icon RXT leaf pack, hammer hangers, sliders, bumper and winch, and a gfc camper so it’s a little loaded down.

I get plenty of torque low down, anyone that says otherwise are those that have never driven a supercharged taco with a tune. A lot more than stock that is for sure.

If you have any questions ive had mine for 3 years and over 50k miles on it with ZERO issues and will try and give you my real world input as a owner.

Wondering why you have 5.29’s on a basically stock set up?

That big diesel torque also comes from the under-square long stroke of those engines.

The Cummins B-Series 6.7L has a stroke of 124mm and bore of 106.9mm.
Compare this with the 2023 3.5L stroke of 88.4mm and bore of 95.5mm.
This is a B:S ratio of 0.86 for the Cummins vs. 1.08 for the 3.5L.

The 3.5 is an over square design, same as the Japanese rice rockets, and is designed to wind up.
Compare this to a long stroke Harley which doesn't wind up, but has buckets of torque in the bottom end.

lol seemed like a good idea at the time. The 5.29 mega thread convinced me that I would be happy with it stock. I also had plans to lift and armor but decided against it since I don’t wheel my daily that hard. I love it now that I have OTT to go along with it. Probably would have been equally as happy with 4.88s given my application, but someday when I turn this thing into a toy I’ll be happy I have the 5.29s.

I have a SC 3rd Gen on 5.29s and I also test drove a 4th gen. The difference was night and day between the two in terms of driving experience. The 3rd gen with the SC has so much more get up and was worth sticking with over getting the next gen. Only con I really see is that you'd probably get better MPG out of the 4th gen (I get about 17 highway with SL 33s) I see that you have the OTT tune. I initially started with them for the SC tune and in short I strongly recommend getting the Yotawerx tune if you get an SC. This difference between the two was as night and day as my 3rd gen to the 4th gen comparison. I'm copying what I mentioned from another thread to summarize:

"For me its not so much wanting to stay in the highest gear as it is using the available torque in each gear. The OTT tune lacks in this department compared to YW. Going over passes you can get in to boost in 6th but as soon as you press the pedal down to get in to 5th or 4th, all boost is gone and you have way less torque than you had in 6th. Now you're pressing the pedal down even more, drop to 3rd and the engine screams up the pass, when the YW tune can calmly climb in 6th. When it cant it downshifts to 5th, stays in boost and calmly climbs in 5th. Same if you needed 4th. There's something in the OTT maps that doesn't allow over 100% load at specific RPM/speed/angle so the SC is basically just dead weight at certain times. I'm also on 5.29s so I'm at 2-2.5K RPM in the overdrive gears which isn't necessarily an unhealthy RPM to cruise at."

To finalize, where my non-SC setup needed 4th to maintain speed up the pass that I drive. The SC setup can do it, and accelerate, in 6th. There's a major gain in low end torque.

This was the info I’ve been looking for!!! And appreciate that you have experience with both tunes! Really encouraging to hear all these perspectives from the SC crew. I’m not as concerned with the gas mileage, but if SC+Tune+5.29 make driving that much more pleasurable then I probably won’t even care about getting a 4th gen since I like almost everything else about the truck.

Was the 4th gen you tested a hybrid or just the turbo? Curious if the hybrid will make that much of a difference, but if the SC makes my 3rd gen a joy to drive then it’s far cheaper to just go that route.

You have a nice truck as is and it's proven reliable to you yes?
Give the 4th Gens a few years to find and workout bugs, make sure they aren't headed the way of the Tundra.
In the meantime you could bank your $$ to open up more options for you in the future.

Any idea why OTT would only boost in 6th and not when it downshifts to 4th or 5th? That doesn’t seem like correct operation. Any idea how the magnuson tune compares to either of the others?

I tested a 4th gen sport(no offroads in stock) with just the turbo but from the reviews I've seen it seems like the hybrids don't offer that much more... And yes adding the SC made a huge difference, I only need 6th gear 99% of the time. Even when doing a casual pass. I should've added I'm running the 87mm pulley not the 90mm that comes with the SC. I ran the 90mm for all of two days so I can't compare between the two.

I tried to work it out with OTT guys sending them logs to show the issue. The ultimate response I got was that there are certain maps they dont modify to maintain some level of safety. I disagree'd with that because it can get boost in 6th at a lower RPM but not in 5th or 4th at a slightly higher RPM. If you go WOT then you can get in to boost in any gear but I think the ECU has a separate map or set of maps that take over during WOT and basically opens the butterfly valve as much as it can. The intake needs to be at or near zero vacuum for the bypass to close and push air through the SC and the stock OTT maps probably don't allow for anything past 0 vacuum.

I ran the stock maggy tune for all of two days so I didnt get to feel it out very much. It was alright but the 87mm tune from YW is in a different league.

Seems like we've covered all the options, and OP is leaning towards #3 (keep old blue, and let him eat going up grades). Everyone has already established that you won't hurt the truck running at a higher RPM, under technically less load.

If you really are feeling the itch for a new truck, I'd say definitely leave yours stock (ish), meaning no SC, as you won't get your money back, and absolutely-definitely do not buy a 2024 if you have a usable vehicle now.

Stick with blue for at least 2-3 years and see if the 4th gens are really worth the money, or if they are as junky as some people think they are. Or at least give Toyota a chance to work out the bugs. (Maybe a mid-gen refresh would be a good time to "trade up"?)

If you think the 3.5 is slow on grades, try out a 2.7. One of the main reasons I jumped completely over the 3.5 to a GX460 instead. I will never forget being passed by a semi while foot to the floor with a strong headwind going up the 395 to Mammoth in the 2.7. That said, the GX460 still needs to drop to 4th gear and spin 3.5k rpms on the big grades, which is conveniently where it makes peak torque.

Haven't really read through the thread because it's late and I have to get to work early in the morning for a weekend shift, buuuuuut, I say keep that sexyyy blue 3rd gen. It's a Voodoo Blue which is one of the best TRD colors ever, a TRD Pro, and it's Voodoo Blue?? Don't bother wasting money on a new truck then. Especially if it's a 2024, the first model year of a redesign. Besides, you already have the best color, VOODOO BLUUUUEE! If for whatever reason you were to trade in for a 4th gen, I'd say wait two or 3 model years to give Toyota some time to figure out the kinks and fix early model year reliability issues. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say wait for the mid-cycle refresh even. Keep the Voodoo TRD Pro. SC+OTT+regearing+whatever else, we've got a huge aftermarket support for these trucks and the 3rd gens just look better than the overdesigned, over-aggressive 4th gens anyway imo. Oh, and it's Voodoo Blue!!
