these forums are a blessing and disease all in one... great for mod details and other info when the truck is running great, but BAAAAAAD when something seems off or wrong.. then I feel like I become a hypochondriac and think everything is broken lmao.. oh the world of mechanical things.. ugh :bananadead:

I think I spent around $1200 to do the heads (gaskets, new plugs, belts, etc), trans service and trans cooler. I did most of the work except for rebuilding the heads and servicing the trans.

So i still haven't found a HVAC foamingcoil cleaner that is labeled safe for rubber, plastic, and aluminum. Lots of stores sold out in general around here.

Temp was creating up just sitting at red light.

Got home, pulled grill and plastic top strip, and waited for it all to cool.
Put Dawn soap in pump sprayer and sprayed repeated both sides of coils. Lots of dirty runoff even though it hadn't looked all that dirty. Rinsed thoroughly with water hose from all sides as best I could.

Let it dry then idled in driveway, AC up all the way. Temp didn't go above "normal". Will update tomorrow to confirm if good cleaning did the trick.

There's an Eric The Car Guy episode where he tests a specific brand of coil cleaner on an automotive application and it works well. You might check into that.

ok.... so I am going to get on here and admit that I "thought" I had checked the whole radiator... stupid me didn't pay attention to how deep those bad boys go into the lower bumper section.. :annoyed:
after work got home and started troubleshooting further and low and behold.. about the lower quarter of the back two rads were caked with mud.. which is a bummer because I haven't seen mud in a long time which means I could have solved this forever ago.

thanks guys I appreciate your replies... I am a goof.. can't believe I didn't notice it. :anonymous:

Yeah man, common issue. It can be hard to find the mud sometimes.

yeah, now I know.. and the truck is running soooo much better and I don't think I got all of it out even. will be taking the pelfrey bumper off this weekend and cleaning them out completely. My cousin came over to help me troubleshoot and when I got down on the ground and looked up through those holes in the lower bumper section I was like na it doesn't look bad at all... took a flashlight and shined it to make sure... sure enough.. looked like concrete lol.. poor truck.

it's only 80* here now, but ran the truck my whole break with AC and it never got a degree higher than 190* even when I put the AC on full blast for a little (till it got too cold for me to handle). Poor truck.. live and learn.. we will see how she does on my lunch, it should be closer to 100* if not over that by then.

Yup. I drove out for lunch too. Temp gage stayed below half. Cleaning that hidden stuff seems to have worked.

Just ordered a scangage ii so I can know better than just the stock gage position. Is trans temp standard or will I need to upload code to it to read trans?

I wanted to point a friend to the great info in this thread so I sorted through and picked out all the posts about radiator cleaning. Here you go:

@totmacher did you ever find a good foaming cleaner for radiators, or is dish soap & water all we need?

My thoughts are RC car cleaners back from my rc days. I found this thread and since it's used on the whole car even plastic parts I would think it's safe for radiators. Here is the link to another forum on RCs that has a mixture that looks like it could work too.
    https://traxxas.com/forums/showthread.php?8980753-My-Way-of-How-to-Clean-Your-RC-Car-PICTURE-HEAVY!

Edit: the above link may have side-effects with different materials so it might be best to use the spray-can stuff from the hobby stores. To my recollection the sprays should be fine on our rads.. **at your own risk of course** maybe I can make a pitstop at my local hobby store and see what they have and what the bottles say.
those darn cleaners always took the dirt and grime right off with no residue or harmful effects.
