Surface Rust Cleanup

I plan to clear the surface rust from my frame and rear axle. Afterward I plan to paint with rustoleum paint for farm equipment.

I know I want to avoid chemicals and oils from getting on the brakes. Also, I'll tape off the exhaust components. Are there any other big no-no's I should be aware of?

 

Brush off dirt, Rattle-can rust reformer, rattle-can top coat. Reapply annually as needed.
Or just do an annual application of Fluid Film or equivalent.

 

Clean up and paint over nuts and bolts or no?
Tape off all bushings?

 

Cleaning paint off threaded fasteners is typically easier than trying to loosen corroded fasteners.

 

I'd just wire brush any surface rust scale if there is, then apply the rustoleum rust converter. Once dry rustoleum black paint. Cosmoline rp342 for the final finish.
