I plan to clear the surface rust from my frame and rear axle. Afterward I plan to paint with rustoleum paint for farm equipment.

I know I want to avoid chemicals and oils from getting on the brakes. Also, I'll tape off the exhaust components. Are there any other big no-no's I should be aware of?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
You might want to look into things to better protect the inside of the frame Like Fluid Film or Wool Wax

Avoid any Rubber based undercoating The prep work needs to be 100% and the application otherwise air pockets form and allow condensation and rust.

    Depending where you live

No rubber, not trying to trap moisture. I do need to look into an inner frame protectant.

What I don't want to do is remove mounts, brake lines, struts, etc. So hopefully I can work around those conponents.

interesting.. and sorry but I am ignorant and curious... what is the purpose of taping off exhaust?

I used the rust oleum stuff on my old TJ a few years back and it looks great and worked well but I just went for it on the whole undercarriage.

was thinking of doing it again but would like to know if there are any risks related to not covering exhaust

Coroseal rust converter and primer can be applied by brush, roller, spray gun to surface areas and undercoating gun with 360° wand extension to box sections. It's a good primer for paint top coat or Fluid Film or Wool Wax.
It works best when surface rust is not removed by wire wheel, wire brush, grinder, flap wheel or Needle gun.
It has the viscosity of butter milk so it's super easy to apply and a little goes a long way. Available on Amazon as is the Undercoating gun with wand.

What kind of risk would there be to getting paint on the exhaust? I mean it won’t look good and will probably smell terrible for awhile as it burns off but other then that should be ok. I would mask off or remove but that’s just me I guess.
