One thing I just thought of is that Tractor Supply sells "Farm Implement Paint" That has a hardener that can be mixed with it toughening it. That may work ,applied by brush. Those hardeners are toxic to spray though so beware.

Yeah, earlier I brushed on a van sickle implement paint in my bed. I put the hardener in the paint according to the instructions, but it doesn't seem to have done much. It scratches down to the primer very easily, but the primer seems to be rock hard. My only guess is maybe it was too humid or something. I need to get that sorted out before I try more painting though, its really annoying. Thanks for the tip though.

Weather plays a huge role in the success of a good paint job. My neighbor did a driveway paint job on his truck with acrylic enamel and hardener a few summers back. He set everything up the night before and the next morning came hot and dry. He had mid temp reducer. I advised him to get retarder or high temp reducer. He declined and got the worst orange peel you have ever seen as a result. He wet sanded the truck so much to get it out that you can see the primer in spots. Hot weather and humidity will cause major problems. Proper reduction of materials is also key in getting a good job. Measure, don't eyeball. Not implying you didn't....

I bet thats got something to do with it. I measured...with a soup can. Was it the 15th line up or the 17th? :anonymous: Next time shall be better. Could I do it by weight maybe?

Damn you southerners and your lack of road salt!

Spend some time washing the underside real good, anywhere dirt and shit can get trapped / accumulate. Then let it dry and coat everything with fluid film. Get the 360 degree spray wand thing (comes as part of the full spray kit or separately) and focus on the nooks, inside the boxed sections of the frame etc. Re-apply as needed or yearly

I always use the measured cups from the auto body supply. I think Home Depot has them too. They make it easy and accurate. You can weigh too. That was how they mixed paint way back. Good Luck, I hope it comes out better next time.

i still need to talk to the owner of the shop to see exactly how they paint the inside and seal it up

so what are the folks up north in the winter states supposed to do when they go buy a used truck from the south(east) or west coast that has not been undercoated since day 1 before it left the lot?

Clean up the rust, treat it with ospho, paint it, then thin film it annually. I wouldn't bother with powder coat - once it bubbles up its a pain to repair. Paint you can touch up easily.

i don't know much about powdercoat, I thought it was a fairly permanent seal, to cut out ALL oxidation, which is the only way rust spreads?

Its permanent until it gets a defect in it, a small hole, a scratch, etc. Then oxidation gets under it and it spreads under the powder coat and eventually the coating peels off, leaving a layer of rust underneath.

At least, thats been my experience with it. Many hours spent grinding on a trailer last summer so I could paint it after the powdercoat failed.

the stuff should be thick enough to not scratch or chip they told me, i dont know, they bake it really hot
I mean they do powdercoat on wheels and those would look nasty all chipped up

I will double check tomorrow, I am having them sandblast and powdercoat my lower shield on the fuel tank

Look up Awl-Grip paint, used to be the hardest urethane paint made.

not sure what you mean by hard time?

the proprietor told me he powdercoats inner frames often and does not see potential problems, it seals it up so no oxygen gets to it which any rust needs to thrive :notsure:
the improved technologies has made this paint/procedure very durable and about the only thing that would hurt it/scrape it is dragging the frame across a boulder or something like that.

i am an amateur and just trying to learn and weigh the options available

    i wonder why they don't?
    you have gravel roads?
    it rains? humid?
    ....

"Cold Climate States: District of Columbia (DC), CT, DE, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VA, VT, WI, & WV."

is your state on this list?
mine is not for some reason (nor is Iowa which borders MN,WI,IL which are on the list) yet we get a fair amount of snow and ice in the winter, over 2ft of snow here in February, snowed every Saturday! and they put the nasty de-ice stuff down every damn time

road sand/fine dirt and dust blasting it for 20 yrs.

Mine looked the same when right after i started parking it. Stayed pretty blasted looking as long as it was my daily.

I brushed it and re primed. Funny they don't make replacement (safety caps) front horns. I could see that rusting if not kept after.
