Can I get some suggestions as to what you guys do with the key fob while surfing?

I used to just take my key with me but now there is the fob. I tried taking the key out and putting the fob in the console but that doesn't work. I'm new to the "new car"technology.

    Thanks.

What do you mean it doesn't work? It absolutely works. You take out the side key. Leave the fob in the truck. Lock the door with the key and take it with you.

It definitely locks with the fob inside. I've done it multiple times with the truck still running (because it was hot AF and my dog was inside while I went to go pick up a to-go order, and left the AC on full blast) and other times with the truck off.

    yes, this.
like I said I have not ever had a fob, reading up on a lot of different ways now. I wanted to get in the water this morning since I Have the day off and needed a quick fix.

I ordered the little key bag that disables signal. Going to try aluminum foil now.

need to learn more about this stuff
i have a tonneau cover. i put it in the bed and then lock the bed.

but you can put the fob in the cab, but instead of locking the cab with the fob button, you lock it manually with the key you pulled out of the fob.

any good waves down there? small kine in LA.

OP You're doing it wrong if you can't lock the truck with the fob inside. I surf almost everyday and I always take the key out of the fob, put the fob in the glovebox, lock the truck via driver's door keyhole and put the key in my wetsuit.

DONT hide the key under your truck like a kook, thieves watch surf parking lots for people doing exactly that.

No need to get tin foil or special bag for the fob either if you lock the truck manually with the key it will ignore the FOB signal.

I put my fob inside lockbox in the cab, that way if they break in they can’t just start the truck. Lined lockbox with foil and no signal gets out.

    Thanks.
No it’s small but better to get wet than not.

For some reason it wouldn’t let the first couple of times I tried. Now I can lock fob in truck and just take key.

Did you know that you can turn off the FOB..?? You have to hold the lock/unlock buttons for a few seconds or so....!! (IT'S IN THE MANUAL).. Then hide it in the truck... take the key and lock truck...put key in swimming trunks (that is, IF you are wearing any)...if not put on a string around yer neck...hehe

Yep, this is what I do, you can deactivate your FOB and leave it in the truck then just slide the mini key out and wear it around your neck. I made a pretty cool necklace with it and wear it underneath my wetsuit. With the FOB deactivated you just lock your rig the old fashion way w the key.

Here is the page from the manual to use the battery save function.

Pull the removable key out, activate battery save function, put the fob somewhere hidden in your truck, push the lock button on the inside of your door, close door. take the key with you.

Know I’m just lost where do you plug in the mini on the door?

I guess you are screwed...Musta been made in Mexico....they put the keyed door handle on the right side, I'd bet....

    Better check the passenger side....!

Ok, so just hiding a active keyfob won’t prevent all thefts!! Make sure it’s turned off to disable it when storing it using the key press method described in the earlier post.

But with the battery saving mode enabled, it appears it will be harder for crooks to do a “relay theft” (using a separate radio near the front door of the owners house or anywhere near a stashed keyfob to pick up and repeat the keyfob signal back to the car to steal it).

Does the Tacoma have a cutoff switch as a Prius does under its dash to disable keyless entry too? That would stop “relay theft” but will also be handy when remote parking for a hike or something where the truck is alone and someone uses a scanning device or even your lost keyfob. If not, anyone know how to install one?
