I made the same mental analogy too. I was always suspect of the cats after the incident given the copious amount of salt water that was run through them. That and I'm sure my tune from URD is probably shit and AFR is probably closer to 14 than 11.9 so I wouldn't be surprised if my EGT was exceptionally high and attributed to the degradation.

At this point a wideband and AFR sensor calibrator is on the short list. I'm really gonna start dicking with the tune and see if I can bring the AFR more ideal both in open and closed loop.

    Oops, missed this, sorry.

Just remove the cat from the exhaust (my bolts stripped out on removal so it required a cut off wheel). And then just take your biggest longest drill bit and go nuts. I used a long prybar to help break everything up until it all shook out the other end. You're left with a hollow can.

AWESOME! Sorry, been busy on other threads and forgot to check back with this one. I am glad you got it figured out! It is such a bitch to try and help diagnose a problem when doing it via internet! I am glad that you got it all fixed. I would be willing to bet that the excessive exhaust backpressure threw off the engine vacuum, and that caused the fuel pressure fluttering. With that, and the clogged exhaust, yeah, you can see how that would cause your problem. I know you are going about the "drill out" method, but I hope that you plan to eventually replace the cat correctly.

I've noticed on several occasions, if i get on it, light to light so to speak, that when i have to come to a quick stop, i get a very hard surge that almost feels lie someone rear ends me? or if it doesn't do it before i get to a complete stop, when i hit the gas to go, it will hesitate THEN surge like someone rear ended me. sometimes hard enough to get a little chirp outta my tires???bigger exhaust help this? I'm all ears!

Lift blocks in the rear, chunks of metal that between the leaf springs and axle.

Axle wrap is when there's slop between the leafs and axle, causing the axle to move underneath the leafs.

Sounds like you are experiencing axel wrap. Where the rear leaf springs are warping causing your axel to surge forward. Sometimes there is a clunk associated with it but generally, under hard breaking you get a surge forward (as the leafs unload) and under accelerating, your leaf pack takes the initial fwd thrust, loading the packs and delaying the power to the wheels.

Its hard to explain but do a search on Youtube and you can find plenty of vids that illustrate this very well.

Lift blocks tend to aggravate the symptoms even more.

These are rear lift blocks, between the axel and leaf springs.

the clunking noise you talk about sounds familiar… is this something i can make stop somehow? doesn't seem good on my transmission

i see. to be honest I'm not sure about the blocks… id have to look? is that pretty much standard on all lifts? 3" Pro Comp suspension…?? i don't work on it, man, i just drive it. I'm learning as i go at the ripe old age of 38

Doesn't affect your transmission. In fact, probably more of an inconvenience. Couple of ways to fix or minimize.

1: Cheapest (if you have blocks), replace with an add-a-leaf (AAL). Not going to fix it but will minimize.
2: Replace your leaf pack with a more sturdy pack. Not familiar with 2nd gens but Dakar makes a good leaf pack for 1st gen Tacoma's for a decent price.
3: Traction bars will completely eliminate it but can get pricey. Budbuilt makes a good traction bar that permits your suspension to articulate and its bold on (no welding).

Couple of other fixes such as helper leafs, extra clamps on your leaf pack, etc... but above are generally the most preferred I think.

i watched a few videos and i can't say by watching them if thats what I'm experiencing, but so far it sounds like a pretty good educated guess. I've been being told its got something to do with the vacuum or something on the s/c and built up exhaust not having anywhere to go except out the exhaust, unlike a turbo which has its own 'point of release'

    that even make sense?
