In your opinion, what’s the best suspension setup for a daily driver that also does some occasional off-roading? I was thinking about going with a King 2.5 setup, but I’ve heard from others that you need to rebuild them every 30-50k miles. That wouldn’t really work for me since I put 30k miles on my truck just last year for work. I’m planning to run 285/70R17 or 295/70R17 tires. If you guys have any suggestions for suspension setups, I’d really appreciate it!

he’s saying the shocks and springs that come on the truck from the factory. OE equipment.

If you really feel the need to upgrade,
Bilsteins would be plenty if you only do occasional off roading. Kings would be way overkill.

I’ve had the Bilstein 5100’s for a couple years now and they’re fantastic. I do about 80% on road, 20% off road driving

I second the Bilstein 5100s all around. Throw an add a leaf in the back and OME springs in the front. Affordable and effective

I don’t think you need to rebuild them as often as some people suggest if you’re not really ragging on them. I’d be willing to bet you’d get nothing less than 100k out of them if you’re just occasionally off-roading, or going on trails to go camping like a lot of others do.

5100's or 6112's are the best performance for the dollar. The digressive valving will help with on road characteristics but i am not sold on it for off road use.
If you were ready to spend that kind of pesos and are worried about maintenance performance suspension is not for you. They have components that end up feeling tighter but unfortunately that means once any play develops your going to feel it much faster. Spherical bearing being the primary culprit.

If you want some extra bling and performance off road look st an elka 2.5 kit non resi. These will be softer on road but small bump compliance is excellent with their linear valving.

I have 2.5 resis up front and it's so unnecessary for my use but it sure looks cool. The standard 2.5 rears have yet to have any notable fade on long fire roads

Brutally honest opinion stock suspension 265/70r17's on a 0 offset wheel will give you all of the look with none of the head aches of a lift with aftermarket components and big tires.
Love the look but there's days I'm looking to make some changes

Bilstein 4600 if no lift. Bilstein 5100 if you want a lift (5100 is just the adjustable version of the 4600).

Aftermarket Bilstein's are roughly 35% bigger in diameter (maybe a hair less) than Toyota factory Bilstein's. Contrary to popular belief factory Billy's are not 4600s, but they do look similar.

I didn't need a lift so I removed the factory shocks and installed aftermarket Bilstein 4600s. They are way better than the factory Billys.

yea its not a set mileage or anything. 30k hard offroad miles is a whole lot different than 30k highway and daily driven miles. ive seen guys go 100k on coilovers before. and getting them rebuilt isnt a big deal.

imo. and thats the problem is that its an opinion and everyone has different ones. i switched from kings to icons on my weekend warrior rig as they handled on road much better without a swaybar and honestly were just as good if not better offroad. i did go from non adjustable kings to full on adjustable bypass icons tho.

that being said for the majority of people a 5100 setup or 6112 setup you cant go wrong for the money. from there it just depends on how deep your pockets are. if your talking about bigger tires and kings then i assume you want something that gives lift?

You’re leaving somethings out of your post that might help, like what your truck has weight wise or what you’re planning. For most people with no/little extra weight, the Billie’s 5100 or 6112 are probably the best for the money. Then you can use the other 2k+ that Kings would cost you for wheels and tires.

Another option is to check out the Dobinsons MRR 3-way adjustable kits. I’ve read/heard great things about them and they’ll be cheaper than Kings. There is no set rebuild interval with them either but they can be rebuilt.

I have Ironman Foam Cell Pros and while they’re holding up great, they are too stiff for my liking and not adjustable.

See if you can find anyone local with some of the kits you’re interested in that will let you ride with them. Might help out plus the in person discussion might be more valuable.

Another vote for 5100's or 6112/5160.

Why the 5100's over the 4600? Same exact shock except the 5100 adds lift? And 6112..?

Any simple breakdown of the important difference in these three?
