If we find a spot in Greenridge to camp, you will be fine in your truck. Just probably not the next day. :)

im crazy enough to take a perfectly good fender to put a snorkel in, but i draw the line at holes in roofs, unless there are already holes there....

id be in as i usually, well have usually gone alone. more power means more distance (i think). a 102" whip travels pretty far, but your cant take it up a mountain if your truck is broke.

although i would rather not need it it would be nice to have.

just one more level of comfort if something were to go wrong. that being said ill prob do it in the near future.

So just thinking out loud on this, and its bringing up thoughts that i had before.

a properly tuned 102" whip can travel pretty far. although not as far as say a HAM, surroundings will still be an issue.

when traveling in a group you shouldnt have any problems communicating; most wheelers have a CB anyway. - your usually always in eyesight.

ive always been a fan of less is more - my first backpacking trip taught me this, as well as dual sporting. take what you need as backpacking is the art of living Uncomfortable comfortably.

even if you were to say have both, your only going to able to use what is available. if everyone but one person has a CB and GMRS and that one person has only has a CB your using the CB.

that said ive always relied on getting myself out of the situation i'm in rather than calling for help. it will be faster, and worst case scenario the worst you'll prob be from someone is 50 miles? - that's only 2 days walk. i usually keep 5 days rations in my truck at all times, so if you needed to bunker and wait i could.

so im back to what i originally came up with when i bought my CB. prob just going to stick with that. the other stuff isnt need IMO, BUT if i were id go HAM.

Gmrs can use repeaters too I believe. And the range is ~15 miles. CB is more like line of sight

They are saying the GMRS has to be pretty high To get that range. 300 feet up I believe on flat un-obstructed ground to travel that far.

repeaters are able to be used, they say you can use an AMP on a CB.

using a short firestik that’s not properly tuned I can completely agree. - line of sight. Swap to say a 5’ you can get a couple of miles easy.

I have a 3ft Firestik I uses daily and a 7’ one. I also have the 102” whip. The whip is by far the best.

I can confirm transmissions on 7 miles using a 102” whip around town and the back country. All in the grounding. That mentioned the GMRS only needs a 6” antenna and little grounding.

From what I’ve read and personal experience.

Hey guys. First post in a long time on this forum, but for a Pittsburgh thread that has camping and beer in the title... I couldn’t resist.

This analogy is very similar to when I had a 4.7 gallon gas tank on my WR and everyone else had the 3.1..... the 4.7 range was useless. So I took it off, sold it and put a 3.1 on.
