Just to be clear and address the op’s questions:
I’d definitely purchase an extended range tank that meets US specs and which can be insured or when added to my truck would not cause my insurance to be canceled. I’d pay up to $1200.00 installed, depending upon waranty and certifications/legality.

Benefits: The benefits would obviously be to have better capability and more miles/time between fill ups. Also an integrated tank would put the additional weight in a better location compared to Jerry cans or rotopacks.

Drawbacks: Yes, the additional weight and potential issues at border crossings.

Share ideas: DOT/ regulatory approvals/ Insurance/ factory Waranty complications.

IMO, rotopax are also redonk expensive, so you're comparing one expensive thing to another expensive thing.

I like a good ol trusty jerry can or two. Expensive ones cost $90 each.

But have you considered other (less expensive) options? I just read somewhere here (in that confessions thread I think) put an aux tank from a ford under his bed, I think where the spare tire usually mounts. Probably cost $200 total.
