Swapping 1st gen Tacoma body on 4Runner

he could put the cab and the tail lights, and just not have a bed...

 

The cool thing to do would be take the manual transmission from your rusty Taco, swap it into the 4Runner and call it a day. Swap the Tacoma front clip; headlights, grille, hood, fenders, bumper, etc. onto the 4Runner as well. Then you’d have one badass rig

 

Without some good Fabrication skills the equipment and a place to work.

Anything but a direct replacement frame will be beyond your skills at this time.

Being it is a 1997 that it lasted this long is real good.

 

I recently put a 1997 regular cab tacoma ona 2000 4 runner. I just did a complete swap. I had to use the complete 4 runner harness, hvac box, pcm, ignition, cluster, column, basically the complete dash. Also had to move the rear cab mounts back about 2 inches. The front 4 cab mounts line up (2 left 2 right). None of the bed mounts line up. There is a 2 in difference in wheel base. I'm going to use that 2 inches between the cab and the bed to hide in a roll bar... the rear suspension is completely different, but the center chunk is the same, so if you have a locker, or gearing upgrades, that can be swapped easily. The rear is a 4 link. And if you know anything about 4 pinks vs leaf springs you know the 4 link is a way better design. Much more wheel travel side to side. It can be done. You do need a welder, but the cab mounts are easy compared to figuring out the dash...

What was your reason for changing the cab harness? A stripped bare bones cab?

Did you start with a 4Runner Rolling Chassis and complete drive train?
