    Will a 1998 4 runner 4x4 3.4 5speed transmission fit in an 04 tacoma with same specs?

Yes. Should be an R150F behind all 3.4’s.

Never saw a factory 5 speed runner in that generation.

For automatics, no. 2003 and above Tacomas utilized ETCS-I electronic drive-by-wire throttles. You can only use 2003 and 2004 Tacoma transmissions and very select 4Runner transmissions with the correct electronic throttle system.

That's for automatics at least, I have no idea for manuals.

I was looking for some answers on a transmission swap and it looked like you knew a lot…. If you don’t mind helping me, would you know if a 1998 4Runner 30-40LE will fit into my 2001 tacoma? Both have the 3.4 auto and 4x4…. I wrecked my 4Runner and have the transmission still and my tacoma was shifting funny and all the sudden whining and grinding noise and no gears will pull at all… I have looked at both and the only difference I see is where the electrical plugs. The 4Runner is more flat and the tacoma round… wasn’t sure if could convert possibly or swap? Thanks for any help.
