It probably isn't worth the hassle if it is much stronger. What do you plan on doing with the truck?

First figure out what you have: http://ttora.com/wiki/index.php/Gear_Codes

If you have a 8.0 then the 8.4 from any non TRD offroad 2ng gen is a but stronger stronger. It might be a pain to get the ABS sensors to work on your truck though. If you only have a 4 banger I wouldn't worry about the axle.

Ah. Well the axle should bolt right in. As I said earlier everything but the TRD offroads use a 8.4 inch diff. All Sports and some SR5s had a mechanical limited slip on the 05 to 08 trucks. After that they are all open. The TRD offroads have a 8.0" axle with a locker. If you get the locker you will need the wiring. http://www.12voltguy.com/product.php?productid=17547&cat=0&page=0&featured=Y

ive never seen a trd 5 lug taco? im talking about 5 lugs. the 6 lug taco/tundra/t100 all use the axle. just a few diffrent gear ratios/axle lenghts.

im trying to swap a 05+ 5lug tacoma rear end into a 96-04 5 lug taco. i want to keep the same wheel pattern front and back. the 2ng gen 5 lug taco uses the same 3rd member as all the 6lugs/tundra/t100. all 5 lugs are spring under rather then spring over.

Sorry I thought it didn't matter. The 5 lugs use a 8.4" diff.
