Or even TRD Off-Road for a cheaper price.

Has anyone done it? Any regrets?

If your sport is already 4x4 then it's gonna be cheaper to add a locker and a few cosmetic mods to turn it a bit more capable than the hassle and cost of trading it in.

    this and that...
for a cheaper price? whats the specs on each vehicle? seems like a heck of a deal if you going from sport to pro for a cheaper price...or, maybe they getting theirs all on the back end of the deal.

If you really want craw control then so be it.

A trd off road would cost you the difference of trade in, so probably looking at $2-3k if you get a similar mileage and equipment off road.

In most states you would have to pay a minimum amount of taxes too if you trade in, basically only the sale price minus the trade in value is taxed.

If you can find one you like for a good price that you can afford then go for it, life is too short to have something you are not happy with.

I will be that guy. Your truck isnt that old. If you were big into off roading youd have gotten the trd Or then. I assume your interests have expanded since then.

did you recently get big into it? Or just a “man, i could have this cool thing but id never use it”

IMO, most people get stuck on features and rarely need crawl control. Now, I GET that. Ive got a manual with an aftermarket locker and when i see someone use crawl control effectively i am a little jealous.

just decide, is this something you will really use?

I know they did a run of AGs a few days ago so there might be a few around inbound to dealers now. Someone is expecting delivery on one that was produced this week and is due at the dealership towards the end of the month.

I’m cool with you being that guy.

to answer your question, yes I recently got Into it. I got my taco back in October of 2019. So still new pretty much. Wasn’t until last month that I started to spend more than 1+ hours on YouTube watching what these tacos could do.

have you hit any trails yet? If not, do some light trails and ride along for some hard ones. Most people are not willing to put their brand new truck into a position where crawl control, or even a locker, is needed. To be honest, I try to avoid those spots myself. Im not an off roader, I am a hunter. Sometimes I go into an area to explore for game and get nervous so i got a locker. I got better suspension so i didnt feel rattled to death. Still, Ive only been in ONE spot where i was pretty sure my locker locker made a difference. And that difference let me Be a bit more reckless. I got to pick the line that didnt leave pin stripes everywhere. Without the locker, id have stopped and walked the rest of the way.

most “off road” people think a maintained forestry road is fun, and youll have no problem there. Tacoma prices are sky high at the moment, so it would give you time to see if the prices come down.

There are plenty of places in your area to test out your current truck. Watching YouTube videos isn’t the best way to decide if it’s something you are in to. Videos edit out the boring drive to get to the cool spot, bugs, dust, having to shit in the woods, and all the other less glamorous parts. But to me, and several other people, it’s still worth it. You may decide otherwise.

Before you spend several thousand more on a new truck and tack another year of payments on, go try it out now with your current truck.

Check out the 559 thread and see if you can find someone to go to Shaver Lake area or any of the trail in Sequoia National Forest if you are farther south.

thank you! Some guidance goes a long way.

I actually finished up my summer course as of yesterday so after work today, I’m headed out for a weekend trip. I’ll get to testing then!

true. I’ve only taken this taco out to the Avocado lake trail. Nothing crazy but it handled well.

100% I bought my Pro because used Tacoma's are rare in my area to begin with and my car was about to be toast so I knew I needed to dump it quick...90% convenience and emotion.
That said, crawl control is really cool but I have used it for a combined 8 minutes in 2.5 years. It is REALLY hard to sit and look at this truck as anything I needed. Don't get me wrong though, this truck is tremendously more comfortable in ANY terrain than I ever will be, even straight from the factory. If I did it all again today, I would definitely be looking at an Off-Road (or a 4runner if we're being honest) because the Pro has been stripped of any real feature "value" now in my opinion. Especially when most of the cool shit is easily replaceable with better/cheaper/cooler aftermarket parts.

nothing decent out in the lots in this area though. Or barely any!

I'll second getting out there in your current truck and seeing what it will do and what you want to do before you trade it in. Back in the day I got my long-bed, 2wd Toyota T100 into some gnarly places/trails because I was too dumb/inexperienced to know that I couldn't take that truck those places LOL!

Oh and make sure your SO is into the off-roading, 4x4 thing too. My GF talks a good game but if I take her down anything worse than a graded Fire Road she asks to turn-back.
