What did you do about the infamous weight sensors in the passenger seat? I’m really curious if any other Toyota seats from around the same period just have these same sensors and are just plug & play. I’m thinking 4th gen 4runner seats could work but I have no clue. Does your Highlander seats have them?

Sounds like he just changed the seat, not the brackets/feet so the original sensors remained. There is no way he could have used the mounting feet from the highlander on the Tacoma without modification.

Hope you don’t mind me reaching out but I’m attempting a 2021 Tacoma power seat swap into my 2015 and I just wanna make sure I’m not screwing anything up.

Drivers seat I have the seatbelt receptacle transferred over, and also the position sensor. Passenger seat, the weight position sensor is plug and play which is amazing. However the yellow airbag harnesses are sadly slightly different and are not plug and play. They both do however have a yellow + yellow/black wire. Am I safe to cut off my old harness and solder in the new male harness for the 2021 seat? Will the abs system work the same in the 2021 seat with the yellow + yellow/black wires from my 2015 or should I just use a resistor bypass on both harnesses on the driver and passenger? Here’s the a photo showing the 2015 harness vs the 2021, and also the 2021 driver seat with the receptacle and position sensor transferred over.

Basically, will the air bags in the 3rd gen seat even work with my 2nd gen Tacoma? Or do I need to use the bypass resistors on both seats, and thankfully since I have the weight position sensors in the passenger side I don’t have to worry about an abs light? Any help here is hugely appreciated.

Don’t cut the plug off. Simply depin the plugs and swap over if the pins are the same and hopefully it works just fine. This is the way I’ve done my FRS seat swaps.

usually the white inner piece pops out to unlock the pins or along those lines. May take a minute messing with it.

Thanks for the reply. So just to make sure I’m understanding, it’s safe to essentially use the yellow and yellow/black wire from my 2015 factory harness into the air bag harness on the 2021 seat with the same colored wires? I read from someone else that the systems aren’t the same and it won’t work but I was surprised to hear this. I’m scared the air bag systems are different and I’ll trip the airbag. Would it be safer to just use a 2ohm resistor on the driver and passenger seat?

    Am I 100%? No.

Do you have a link to whichever thread regarding someone saying it won’t work?

I highly doubt your airbags would blow. If you swapped everything with battery disconnected, then reconnect when you are done, worst case you would likely just get an srs code if the system isn’t happy. At which point you disconnect battery and revert back and all is well again.

what I’m basing this on is just my experience swapping plugs on my FRS seats with my Tacoma seat plugs and having zero issues. Just need to ensure your solid yellow goes to solid yellow and the yellow/black stripe goes to yellow/black stripe.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/swapping-a-3rd-gen-interior-into-a-second-gen-how-to-unfinished.838136/

Here’s the thread, its from the guy that put an entire 3rd gen interior in a 2nd gen. It’s his first post under the seats sections but I’ll copy paste the relevant content below. That’s good to know though that it worked for your FRS seats. I’m probably gonna give it a go tomorrow if I get get those harnesses depinned and repinned without destroying them in the process. Thanks a bunch.

“So the third Gen seats provide quite a few options. Also more good news, the third Gen seats are also a direct swap. They mount up the exact same.

If you’re pre 2008 2nd Gen, even more good news, you don’t have seat air bags so the seats are plug and play also.

For everyone else, you’ll either A- have to use an SRS bypass resistor. LINK: https://a.co/d/7MIZpEU

OR- you will have to take the SRS module out of the 2nd Gen seat and put it into the 3rd Gen seat, the 3rd Gen module WILL NOT work with the 2nd Gen restraint system and you will get an SRS code.”

Yeah I read that and didn’t understand what the issue is. He implies the side airbags won’t work then makes it sound like it’s actually just an issue with the seat piggyback ECU for the seat sensor…but you are saying that yours plugged right in and works yeah?

There’s a number of reasons he may have tripped an srs light.

That makes sense. Were you able to depin and repin your harnesses easily? I figured out how to get the inner housing out but I’m struggling to even see if these metal pieces are remnants of the old pin or just receptacle pieces. I’m assuming these holes are what I would use to release the pins. I guess at this point I’m reassured the airbags in the new seats WILL work but I’m concerned about breaking the harness or pins on the factory harness as opposed to just using a resistor.

Hard for me to tell what exactly that is. Looks like the terminal pins were ripped off the wire. But this would be obvious as you’ll have bare wire left behind.

Ended up successfully installing the 2021 powered seats in my 2015. Will post a separate write up thread soon for anyone interested.

Anyone swapped out 2010 access cab seats to a 2011 double cab, both with side curtain airbags? I feel like it should be plug and play?

You’re talking just about the front seats? Both buckets? Aren’t they the same seat?

The double cab doesn’t have fold flat, the access cab does. I got a fold flat from a wrecker with the wiring harness and mounting hardware and the intact airbags. One day I’m gonna install it. If it all works out I just gotta get the seat heater swapped and buy new front row katzkins.
