Shit got really real for realz on my block twice about 5 years ago.

First incident happened when I was talking to a neighbor in the street in front of my house and a Dodge Challenger rolled up slowly down the street. I interrupted our conversation and told her to take off cause shit is gettin' sketchy here in a real way. As I'm running to my locked front door I looked back and noticed that, first off his window tint was way too dark and illegal, and secondly he stopped in front of my house. While I was fumbling for my keys he got out of his car. At this point I'm convinced that I was going to be gunned down in the mean streets of suburbia. This dude was huge. Then he pulled out a picture of my neighbors dumbass kid and asked if I knew him or had seen him recently. He identified himself as a US Marshall. I even made him show his official ID. He ended up being legit and apparently the stupid kid was caught up in a drug ring.

Then a few months after that my neighbor across the street got her house raided by the feds at "o dark hundred" one early morning. They were good because neither me or my dog heard anything. Rumor had it my neighbor got "lippy with the agents" and they hog tied her in her livingroom with zip ties. She was harboring a drug dealing soon to be ex-wife of another neighbor on the street.

You can't make this stuff up...nothing shocks me anymore.

I just see the M4 and MP5/UMP as having two totally different roles. I wouldn't want an M4 in a populated area such as the apartment complex, too much penetration. I'd feel much more confident in a CQB with an SMG than a FO carbine in an LEO role. Plus I imagine the handling characteristics and operation would be easier in tight spaces with a SMG vs carbine/rifle. War fighting is another thing altogether, definitely want the biggest gun there... I just feel like the M4 is overkill for Police.

    Then again...

"...[T]he cops got tanks 'cause the kids got guns..."

    :notsure:

Cool that you got to play with a UMP, I've shot a couple mags through a MP5, had a good time but decided I wouldn't want to own one. Never shot a .45 SMG.

The over-penetration thing is a common misconception. Around 8-10 years ago, when departments across the country were switching to the M4, penetration was one of the biggest selling factors, to get the liability-concerned administrators on board. A 9mm pistol round, and especially a 45 ACP, are far more likely to overpenetrate through the sheetrock walls of a house or apartment than a typical 5.56mm round is. The 5.56 will penetrate body armor, unlike the pistol rounds, but doesn't go through walls and hit the neighbors.

You're right that the MP5 is handy inside a house, but the 14.5" barrel is not exactly unwieldy. The sun has set on the era of the submachinegun. It's a very niche weapon now that a short carbine does basically everything an SMG does, but much better. I'm not an M4 fanboy, I loved the MP5 and to this day I'm more familiar with its manual of arms, but the benefits of the M4 are huge. As for full auto, that went away with our MP5's. I wouldn't use it anyways, semi-auto is far more effective for most uses.

(Sorry for the thread drift OP). :)

You might be right. They did have 2 K-9's, a German Shepard and a Malinois I just didn't get pics. Also had dudes with riot shields and full gear in the back. They had a loud speaker, blew out some windows, took down the doors and tore the inside up.

Agree, swat truck. These guys had all the gear. They probably would have brought the truck if this guy would have locked down with known firepower.

It would depend. As a general rule, the city/ county where the agency resides pay restitution for any damages done on calls. The homeowner/ property owner files a claim and it gets paid. The exception is that if the suspect is arrested for criminal charges and the damage wouldn't have been necessary if they'd complied, then the city/ county might not be liable.

Yeah hopefully they help her out. She was at work and was clueless about what was going down at her house until I notified her. They ripped her house up pretty good and did not find the suspect. Hopefully they take care of her.

Nothing better than a dog. It beats every other job in law enforcement. This guy was my partner, and for 6 years, we spent every moment together; work, home, vacation, etc., 365 days a year. We were attached at the hip. He's 1/2 Mal, 1/2 GSD

Thanks! I'm a Mal fan. I've put 4 dogs through training personally, two Mals, my cross, and a GSD. And I've agitated for and watched at least another 40 dogs, almost an even mix of each breed. I love the drive and slightly psycho temperament of a Mal. After working with dogs for so many years, GSD's seem slow and lethargic to me. There is a "friendly war" between the Mal and the GSD camps in law enforcement.

Never owned a Mal. They remind me of an agile Shepherd. I did own a Shepherd as a kid. Her name was Sissy and she was an awesome dog! My brother is a patrol LEO and is striving to become K-9:)

Good for him! He won't regret it. It's a ton of work and extra hours (not to mention a lot of extra responsibility, since you're expected to run the show on a hot call once you get there), but incredibly rewarding. My best advice to him would be to put in his time and show interest by becoming an agitator/ decoy, if he isn't already. You learn a ton about dogs and training them by agitating, and it also shows dedication. Our local trainer will even let prospective handlers foster and train dogs that haven't been purchased by a department yet. I had my boy for 6 months before our agency bought him and gave me the spot. It gave me a huge leg up against the competition. I put in 3 years and more than 1000 hours of my own volunteer time to training dogs before I got the handler position.
