    Mobile 1 oil, good stuff
Stick to the factory oil filter, nothing wrong with it

Remember seeing a post under MODS I think with oil filters, the Toyota one was the BEST

I personally switched over to full syn in engine and both front and rear diffs and transfer case at 3,000mi. Did it 3 weeks ago after our last big snow. Was surprised by the amount of metal on the drain plugs for the diffs at first. But then again the most wear gears have is when they are new.

Nope, it does protect better as well.

Not true. Maybe only if you have some major leaks, but massive sludge buildup from poor quality oil is partially plugging them. A high quality non-synthetic would remove the buildup just the same as a good synthetic.

From what i've gathered, all amsoil and redline products are better quality than just about everything else on the market, and that valvoline durablend semi-synthetic motor oil is a good choice for beaters (excellent protection for the $). I'll stick to those brands.

i read an article a while back and amsoil was the best. They did invent it after all. The second place was an underdog Pennzoil platinum followed by royal purple, mobil 1, castrol syntec were all really close...

i use penzoil platinum because its one of the best and usually cheaper than amsoil

i switched to synthetic two oil changes ago. i've tried the castrol and valvoline. i know those aren't the biggest, most high dollar ones, but i figured they are better than conventional oil and will make my truck last a few years more. i haven't had any leaking, except for the typical little bit right after changing. i also switched to a k&n filter last time as well. since changing to synthetic oil, even with the cheaper brands, i feel like my truck runs better overall and my mpg has seemed to bump up about 1-2mpg without any changes in my driving. there was no throttle response change. one thing i noticed was that on the valvoline bottle, there was some kind of 300,000 mile guarantee, anybody know anything about that? and also, you guys say you can use synthetic longer. well i always changed mine at 5k miles, i just reset the 5k mile oil light reminder. i have been doing that with the synthetic as well. so am i throwing out my synthetic oil too soon? i mean is it good up until like 8k miles? or would still changing at 5k miles be like the equivalent of someone who changes conventional oil at 3k miles?

oh and chris 4x4 did the comparison on filters. the stock filter has 2x the filtering media of the leading brand. I just bought a case of 10 toyota filters off ebay for $37 shipped. Real toyota filters. the seller is a toyota dealer

    just remember

    1. synthetic WILL make the engine last longer
    2. price of synthetic is 3x the price of dino BUT it will last 3x as long so its pretty much a wash

as far as the 300,000 mile guarantee goes, i think it's because nearly every car whose owner follows the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule perfectly the life of the car ends up reaching 300k miles.

yeah, i just looked it up. it has all kind of guidelines, disclaimers, and disqualifications...the big one i noticed was changing synthetic every 3k, it's just a gimmick to sell more of their oil...should have saw that coming, lol

Based on when I did the SWITCH to full synthetic I had cam seals leak not only once but twice, now I am not saying that had anything to do with that but I had a mechanic friend of mine do the fix at the time of water pump, now I have a rear main and valve leak all at 140 K. Not saying it was the synthetic that caused the leak, but I am going to try a different oil just to "see" if it helps. BTW all diffs, transfercase and tranny changed to synthetic with no leaks???? SO who knows

Pennzoil Plat/Ultra, Castrol Edge, Mobil 1. All are good synthetics. German Castrol is always a good choice too if your local stores carry it. Some will give you a longer OCI than others(Edge and Ultra). I change somewhere between 5k and 8k just because I'm prudent. Getting a few UOAs isn't a terrible idea if you're really scared about worn out oil. They're relatively cheap and will give you a good breakdown analysis and a rough idea of how long you have left on the oil.
You can switch to and from syn whenever you want. It's not going to affect your engine at all.
Toyota OEM oil filter. None of the others even come close.
