X2. My manual says "...best performance, use 91+..."

my v6 is getting about 300 miles to a full tank, about 17 gallon fillups, with mostly highway driving around 70- 75 so hard to go slow in this thing, and pretty fast putting around town, i live in a mountain town so lots and lots of steep steep hills.

hmm, i gotta test this out. i just filled up mine with 87 and so far i think i have averaged 250-300 miles each tank out of the 5 or 6 tanks i've run so far. i wanna see how much better i can do on higher octane.

Octane delays ignition thus making it less combustible.

I went to carlsbad NM this past weekend, and I average my mpg on 87 to be around 20.6 mpg. Did it again with 91 averaged around 21.67 overall not bad. It was all highwat very little city and I get 350 miles to the tank on 87 and 370 on 91. Trying to hit 400 miles to the tank. All stock 101,000 miles on the odo. Not bad for a v6 me thinks. My wife has a 06 g6 gt and she gets around 500 miles to the tank outta her 3.5. But I have a tacoma so I'm cooler anyways :)

but if you take the cost of gas from 87 to 91 and mileage gains if any...i think you are losing out in the end..

Not less combustible, just takes more energy to activate the reaction, and complete combustion takes longer once the reaction occurs. Delaying ignition =/= less combustible material.

Edit: I think what you mean is less flammable.

Kinda sorta maybe. Higher octane gas have tighter production tolerances, so there would be lower chances of any abnormal substances finding their way into the fuel. I'll grant you, in any decent brand gasoline of appropriate octane rating, it's not going to make a difference til after decades of use with no maitenance.

So for all intents and purposes, yeah, that point is moot. I guess some could consider it an "advantage".

Not much of a difference between 87 and 91 for me. I averaged 19.44mpg with 87 octane over 12 tanks and 19.87mpg with 91 over 10 tanks.

Less than .5mpg is not worth the difference in price for me.

Exactly. The engine will run fine on 87 and that is the minimum requirement so they probably have to advertise that along with the corresponding hp and torque numbers for 87. That being said, I'm sure there is also some blurb in the manual about "research higher octane" or something like that. When you look into that, you'll see that the engine does have higher output when using 91.

If I'm not mistaken when the second generation trucks first came out, I think the rated hp and torque numbers were based on 91. There was a drop in the stated output numbers and that was from the switch to reporting them based on 87.

There is probably some law out there that says that the quoted power specs have to be based on the lowest required octane. Heck, maybe there is even a law that says that engines must run on 87. I know my wife's Passat with the 2.0T is similar. Minimum required is 87 but 91 is recommend by VW. It's probably because the engine was tuned on 91 and it gets better peak power using the higher octane, despite the fact that it will also run on 87.

The drop in HP numbers was due to the new testing requireing all engines to be tested for their ratings as they are equiped in the vehicles. I.e., OEM air intake, full exhaust, and all accesorize. They have to be rated useing the lowest octain fuel unless the minimum required is 91+, and that must be stated on the vehicle.
