Rough idle could just be a dirty maf sensor, have you cleaned it?

Do you have an FSM? If not go get one, because it goes over how to trouble shoot this issue in pretty good detail. Instead of just throwing parts at it, it will guide you to check the sensors individually (without special scan tools) and allow you to narrow down the problem logically instead of randomly spraying cleaner on stuff. If you havent yet, i would change the fuel filter, its probibly due for that anyway. I highly doubt its the EGR like you were thinking in the other thread, my wifes camry has been driving for 10yrs now with a bad VSV (egr) valve and the car runs just fine.

how bad of a rough idle are we talkin? I've never had an efi vehicle of any brand that idled as smooth as some of my old carb'd v8s. From my taco right up to my dmax which is a whole different ball game all together, all my efi vehicles felt like they had a slight miss after idling for a bit. I'm not talking like holy hell shake the crap out of everything miss but just slight noticeable jerk here and there. A properly running carb set up can be very smooth and not have any of the issues mentioned above if dialed right. That being said I think the only reason to swap a vehicle like these little tacos back to carb would be just to say you did. I don't think the hassle would be worth it for any other reason, except maybe a blown motor and the only replacement you can get is a carb motor.

He's already said he doesn't live in mountains, and his truck is 2WD and a 5 lug, at that. Good post, if he had a 4x4.

its hard to explain but it feels like the choke is still on at idle but it doesn't have a choke, runs smooth when its cold but turns rough when warmed up

plugs are new ngk and gapped correctly, all plugs are firing, all plugs are getting fire, all injectors are working, all new ngk plug wires, new set of ignition coils (2), there are no noises or compression issues with anything, the valves are ok, the fuel pressure is ok, the gas is ok, the air filter is ok, the MAF is ok (cleaned 6 times and swapped out even), the injectors are all new and no difference from the rough idle with the old ones, new IAC and TPS made no difference.

as I said earlier everything but the EGR and the upstream o2 sensor has been replaced and no codes were ever thrown for anything. its not burning oil or loosing water and engine oil is clean and good with nothing leaking on or from the engine anywhere, all vacuum lines were leak checked and nothing is old or cracked anywhere.

What about your vapor canister? Have you tested that? If you've ever over filled/topped off your gas tank even once it's ruined supposedly. There is a way to test it, you need a hand vacuum pump though..

Why would you want to go back to non fuel injected engines..... It's like saying you want to go back to horse and buggy. Actually your best bet would be to get your engine fixed.

If you are really that frustrated, swapping it for a 6 cylinder would be way cheaper than trying to kludge some old skool stuff into it.

I grew up on multi carbed V8 stuff with distributors. The basic problem with them is you tune them for something specific. Street, drag racing, interstate cruising, elevation changes, etc etc.

It can't auto correct, you have to know it's time to tinker, and how to tinker. Going to races from one part of the country to another requires rejetting and other nonsense to compensate for humidity, temperature.

A proper EFI / ECU package handles most of that for us. Yea, smart ECUs can be laptop tuned on the fly for those changing conditions, for those on the ragged edge, but the average joe doesn't need that.

There are things about older, simpler vehicles I actually miss. But a carb and distributor aren't part of that list. ;)

hey keaker, can't remember if you mentioned it or not but how do the engine/trans mounts look? might be a b&$%h to get to them and see but worth checking?

You definitely have options with a Prerunner truck. Not trying to be a buzzkill up above.

The sad thing about all of the work I had done and did,,was expecting more from it.

To do it again? Would love to,,but it would definitely be a efi system of some sort,,and it would not be 4 cyl.

    Went for a ride in a 72 Datsun 2wd 5 speed,,with a Ford 2 barrel 302 in it.

    Good Lord!

Dont even ask. 99% of the members here won't give you an honest answer. What they will do is belly up and accept what Detroit or Japan sells them. I for one am old school. Gimmie a carburetor and manual trans any day. I can fix that thing anywhere with a child's toolbox. Sure, I have a tacoma but I also have a 67 f250 4x4 that I can do anything to, without these guys telling me to just accept what they built. No way.
