More questions from the rookie here. I purchased a 99 V6 3.4L with 260k on it. I've done some snooping around and seen which oils and filters people prefer over others but im curious about switching from regular oil that was ran for the first 260K to a synthetic. My buddy i got it off of always changed his oil around the 3k mark at the local lube dude. $20 buck all the way around kind of service. Went down to Napa and got Mobile 1 and a nice filter. Would you recommend switching to a synthetic at this high of mileage? Keeping it the same? Ive ran synthetic before but never switched over at this high of mileage. Would it be better for the engine? Worse? Stay the same? Any input would be helpful here!

    Thanks!8160_10156474388220500_3646095292066247792_n.jpg

Be interested in hearing peoples thoughts on this, I just got one with 230k miles and I plan on owning this truck for the very long term.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
What's up with the truck in the photo?

Looks like it needs more than just synthetic oil.

If you want to run synthetic go ahead, it's not going to hurt anything unless there are worn seals or sludge build-up. In which case you may see some seepage but it's up to you to fix them. Synthetic will allow you to go longer without changing (5-10k depending on which synth) but always check your oil as different driving conditions change how often it needs it. There's also nothing wrong with regular oil either as long as it's changed at interval. If you live in colder climate synthetic will move easier on start-up (as mentioned in another post you can do 0w-30)

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Think on this a bit. I had a Ford Ranger FX4, 4.0. Around 190,000 miles I decided to treat my ride and upgrade to synthetic oil. I had always been very diligent with 3000 mile regular oil changes. The change ended up killing the motor. Not the oil directly but what was underlying. The synthetic cleaned up the internals. The oil passages and bearing clearances were all nice and clean, and loose. My mains started clanking. Valves loosened up. And that v6 started leaking from everywhere there was a seal that got cleaned out. I ended selling the truck, needing a motor. I won't do that again.

My thinking would be, if the truck has 260,000 miles using conventional oil why would you want to switch?

Well thats why im here. If the synthetic will add life to my truck and be better for the engine in the long run then ill switch. Since im getting mixed reviews i think im going to swap that Mobile 1 for some conventional oil.

Good thinking. I say always stick with what brung ya. If you buy new, go with the synthetic and you will never go wrong, yet if it's had Dino oil all it's life, stay there.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Run it with confidence. Synthetics do wonderful things for old engines and 3.4's are known to sludge at high mileage but the synthetic will slowly clean it up nice and prevent that. I run synthetic at 7500 mile intervals in my truck without issues. If you actually maximize the oil change interval synthetic oil changes are cheaper in the long run. I change my oil twice a year and would have to do it 4-5 times on conventional.

It's not exactly rocket surgery. If you're diligent about checking the oil level then what does it matter? If you stay with conventional then change it every 5-7k. If you switch to synthetic then do it every 8-10k. The engine doesn't have a brain and emotions to judge your decisions.

The same thing I did with diferencial.

I put AmsOil Synthetic in my used Tacoma and 3 years later the battery died, coincidence?
