Searched around, and came up with a couple similar threads, but no solutions. It being a couple years later, I figure someone's at have an update.

Anyway, my 1998 2.7 Tacoma doesn't have a tach on the cluster. Local yard has a good bit of tacos and one is a 2000 2.7 with the tach on the cluster. Is this a simple plug and play? My truck odometer isn't digital, but the roller.
Ive seen a couple people say that all the tacomas were pre-wired for a tach, just some got them and some didn't.

    Anybody successfully completed the swap?

    Thanks
    -Josh

    Seems like it

EDIT: wait, your odometer on your 1998 is mechanical? You probably have to make sure the new cluster is the same. I'm not exactly sure though.

AWESOME!! Thanks for the links. The guy on Yotatech did the switch, and states that even though the odometer is rolling numbers, it is electronically driven.
Even better, is that he switched it with a 01+ cluster with the fancy white background, and it's still just a plug and go.

Looks like I'll be heading to the local salvage to see if they have a 01+ 2.7.

I had a 98 base model with a 01-04 white face cluster with tach .. they were both from 4cyl 5 speed. thats the only catch.

Did it matter if it was a 2.4 or a 2.7? Or just both 4 cyl?

How hard was it to remove the cluster? Had to pull the cluster on my old truck and it required taking off about half the dash.

15 minutes, You have to take the dash apart under the wheel and the area surrounding the wheel.

Philips screwdriver and I think a 10mm socket.

Plug and play on the back of the cluster.. 3 wired connections.

Do an led swap on the bulbs before you swap the cluster though.

I did red and it looks amazing!

    the orange was boring..

Pretty sure tigerfan00 did an amazing walkthrough for this.

I can't find it with a search, maybe someone else can.

They are 194's. Get the ones with 5 led's.... I did mine last night. the pic doesn't really do much justice but WOW, what a difference. I've done my shifter bulb, and the ashtray buld as well. those are 74's.

    Cool. Thanks
Was trying to see if I could find them local since I'm going to go to the salvage yard today that has about 10 or so 1st gens. But guess I could wait and install once the lights arrive.

Does the donor vehicle also have to be 4x4 if mine is?

Finally got my cluster switched out.
First one I got was from a 6cyl and it didn't work with the 4cyl. Next one was from a 4cyl and it works great. Also switched in blue LEDS. Great mod.

If you plan on doing this, remove the piece around the steering wheel or you can crack the cluster surround. Ask me how I know.
Luckily I found one on ebay for cheap and switched it out.

Will try and get pics up.

I looked up the part numbers for the tachometer component of the gauge cluster for 2000 2.7 and V6, and they are the same part numbers.

Both engines use tachometer 83881-04100 from 1997.06 through 2000.09.

I'm wondering what is it about the gauge clusters that makes them specific to either a 4 or 6 cylinder? Maybe this isn't true, and the engine type doesn't matter at all. One difference, according to the FSM, is that the tach signal for the V6 truck comes from the igniter module, and on the 2.7 it comes from the ECU.

If you use a v6 cluster in a 4cyl truck, the reading will be off. I dont know the reasoning behind it but it is
