Found this on another forum which shall remain unnamed.

Engine Oil: 4wd With filter 5.5 qts Without filter 5.2 qts Dry Fill 6.2 qts

Transmission: 5VZ-FE w/ 5 speed = 2.3 qts (but just fill until it comes out of the fill hole).

    Diffs:
    Front: 1.22 qts
Rear w/o Diff Lock: 2.69 qts
    Rear w/Diff Lock: 3.18 qts

For the transfer case, just fill until it starts spilling out. I'm guessing around 1.5 qts?

Those numbers look about right. As I recall, I bought 9qts of Amsoil SevereGear when I swapped my drivetrain to synthetic. I didn't pay a lot of attention to how much went in each component, since I just filled until oil dribbled out of the fill hole. (I ended up using just over 8qts total.)

Those numbers are the exact quantities that I found from the owner's manual when I did mine.

If your engine is really gunked up the oil seals may be protected from the oil which keeps them in shape. When you switch to synthetic oil the gunk will get removed from the seals and if a seal is dried out a little from being protected from the oil by the gunk, it may leak. As the new oil gets to the seal it should recondition the seal and it will stop leaking. That's the second best scenario. The first being if it doesn't leak at all. The third you've already figured out. New seals. Mine didn't leak when I switched. Someone had done a good job of keeping the engine clean inside. I hear there are flushes to clean dirty engines. I know nothing about them except when a mechanic put one in my old truck I had a lifter ticking for about 3 weeks, then it went back to normal. I think synthetics are the way to go. I like Amsoil. I put Redline MT 90 in the manual transmission because of post I read on this site. Much better.
