Thanks. Planning to go 315's and re-gear this year (hopefully sooner than later). I think my comment/question got lost in the sea of comments in your build thread. Any chance you can shed some light on the switch from Camburg to SPC UCA's on your truck?

I love my 5.29s. They’re great in 4LO on the trail, and they keep the revs right around 3000 or so at freeway speed, which is great for passing and for hills. I get about 15mpg, but my truck isn’t my DD so that helps.

That said, if you were ever thinking of a crawl box at some point, you could possibly do 4.88 to preserve some mileage and highway manners and still have stupid low gearing with the 4.7 crawler gears.

Going to have to look into that. My current plan is to go 5.29's and install a front elocker and leave it as is. I do like the idea of a crawl box but don't know much about them yet as far as parts and installation goes. Also, your truck has a manual trans right?

    Yep. I’m a manual.

A crawl box is another rabbit hole to fall down, but it’s basically the gear reduction section of a Hilux transfer case that’s bolted up between the existing chain drive case and the transmission. So you basically end up with three possible low range gears: stock low 2.3:1, crawl box low 4.7:1, and compound low 12:1. They’re expensive, the wait times are usually ridiculous (mine was over 6 months late), and they require extending the front drive shaft and cutting down the rear, as well as locating the shifter in the cab.

That said, I’ve heard they’re a game changer for crawling. I got mine (which is still in the box) so that I can have more control at slower speeds and not have to constantly roast my clutch.

I went with 4.88s, because it’s a daily driver. I don’t push that hard on trails. Someday later down the road maybe a crawl box will be added. But only if I got an extra 3k laying around.

I have an Inchworm chain driven 4.7 TC behind an auto trans, coupled to a less than powerful 2.7 (3RZ) motor.
Running 33’s and 5.29’s works very well in this area for daily driving and off road.
Dave going to 35’s and having an auto trans... 5.29’s will be perfect.

How much was the inchworm when all said and done?

It's discontinued now. IIRC, before Inchworm was bought by Low Range, it was close to 3k.

Thanks for the info, I've got lots to process before making a final decision. It also seems like something I can add later on if I find the need for a crawl box. Right now, I'm thinking of adding the front elocker since I'm going to regear anyway.

In your case, with a manual, I think it makes even more sense. Will definitely save your clutch!

My truck is my daily driver right now too. Which is fine since I live close to my workplace...I take back roads to work, so I don't think the 5.29's would be that bad for me. Thing is, I do have to go offsite every once in a while (can be up to 30-45 miles one way). That's when I'll know if 5.29's were the way to go or not (seems to work okay for my bro in law in his 4runner @nihkon ).

Only reason I started contemplating 315's is because we have a 3rd car now (bought a new Forester last year so my wife's Accord just sits in the garage). I want to take the Accord to work full time but it's lowered and is on a nice set of wheels that I don't want to eff up (the roads that I drive are always under construction or are riddled with potholes). We'll see if I'm able to fully switch back to the Accord as my work car. Really want something I don't care about as much.

Thanks Mike! Still need to see how your truck performs off road (our last trail run seemed a little too easy for ya). Would be cool to sit shotgun when you go into super low gear!

I think you’re definitely on the right track, man. A crawl box isn’t a necessity by any means, and you can always add one later if you feel like it.

If you want to get a glimpse of what the install looks like for reference, check out @cbechtold ’s build. He’s building one up right now.

Yeah the hard thing for me is im 100+ miles from most of my camping and wheeling. So I was looking for balance. Im happy with the 4.88s.

I guess it should said that the crawl box is a 2/3k investment that you should really know if you're going to take advantage of. If you do a good amount of technical wheeling, go for it, but if not, then definitely think it. If you truly believe you need it, then go for it, however the answer for most is going to be that they don't need it.

I'll be happy answer any questions you have. Maybe help you decide if it's a justifiable purchase for you.

Sounds good. Yeah, I've been checking out Cory's build for a minute now.

Good call. I'll have to ask my bro-in-law more about how his 4runner is on the highway now compared to before his regear.
