OP, that's all I was saying. You need not buy a separate quart for nothing, if 5 fills it up. The quarts are kinda expensive compared to the jug per quart.

You could just buy 1 quart of generic synthetic (SuperTech, Napa's own brand, of which is really Valvoline, Advance Auto, etc.) for a 1/2 a quart.

Then save the rest for next time to top it off. I'm actually using Castrol now cuz' it was on sale. Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Valvoline, even Quaker State (Shell) Fram (Amalie) are all good.

Fill it to full & don't stress about it. I understand how it is. You should have seen me when I bought my truck. First brand new truck ever & I paid cash for it.

I was so picky & paranoid about everything. Eventually, like expensive new shoes, they get broken in & you can relax.

    Don't worry, be happy :).

Might I suggest you put your first name in your signature & maybe the state. Even Opie from Andy Griffith would be fine, lol.

You seem like a good guy with a sense of humor. I know you'll take good care of your truck & I respect you for that. You'll fit right in here.

As I said, I hang around in the music thread if you need anything at all. Stick around .
Okay, I'm off to get that friggin' unicorn sticker off:bikewheelie:.

Tony, my fellow Floridian. Glad to meet you buddy!

5.5 sounds excellent. You'd be suprised how little a 1/2 a quart means in a pan full of oil. Negligible at best.

Now for oil filters, lol. I either use Fram 3614 or the Toyota D3. The D3 is a little larger than the D1 & fits mine fine just fine.

I've cut open a lot of oil filters (I have a dedicated tool for it, kinda like a copper pipe cutter). & these are the best for our application.

Fram filters out particulates better & the Toyota has more oil flow.

The Fram is about $12 at Walmart.

The D3 or D1 is about $6-$7 at the dealership with a drain plug crush washer included.

I'd go with the Toyota, as long as you're not driving on the beach.

Again, welcome & happy to see you're aboard, Tony.

    Thanks.
I was originally concerned about the 2.7 but here in Florida have not had real issues with power in the city or hwy. Not needing to tow anything or doing serious off road and it shifts fine for me. Just took a little getting used to with knowing the pressure on the pedal. I actually like the simplicity of the truck and hope it will last a long time with no issues but seems pretty easy to work on just in case.
Done some small stuff like mats, nerf bars etc but would love to eventually change out the wheels and put some meatier tires hoping that won’t effect the performance much. Everyone on here seems cool and I appreciate all the help and info.
Glad everybody here isnt into collecting dam ducks on the dash

As for the filter i think id prefer more flow with the Toyota. I dont mind changing it out more frequently. I was going to use amsoil. Their signature series is good up to 25k miles im sure I could stretch it out to 27,500 miles lol.
Just kidding no way i could go 25k miles i wouldn’t even go the 10k Toyota recommended. I think 7k at most especially as hot as it gets here

Excellent choice Tony! One of my best friends has an independent shop in Bradenton.

Amsoil is all he sells. Top tier stuff. He always sends me a couple gallons for Christmas.

Now that's a gift I can use, lol.

As long as you change it once a year, you're good.

    That & a D1 (official designated replacement) or D3 filter (I'm a rebel) is a great combo.

I think you're all set. Maybe a filter wrench. Those Toyota filters are slippery. Oh, the drain bolt 14mm.

This is what I use. $5 at Walmart.

Drop in the music thread once in awhile, if only to say hi.

Have a great day, Tony & I'll see you later. :)

The D3 is on the right.

Only slightly lager filter media than the D1.

Hey what rpm should it idle at? was just sitting in parking lot and started to get a slight vibration in the seat almost as if it were going to stall. Turning ac on or off made no difference. Haven’t noticed this before. I don’t know if it’s running hot either where the temp usually is

    That's perfect. 800 RPM +/- & the temp 1/2 way up.

Exactly like mine, I'll post a pic, if I remember to take one.

Have a great night buddy. :cookiemonster:

Just remember if the "check engine light" comes on, the traction control light will also come on.

    It's a Toyota thing.

Here's a the Fram & Amsoil filter cut open.

As you can see the Fram is well built & the Amsoil is almost identical, just sloppy with the glue. Probably made by Fram.

BTW, they carry the D3 in my Walmart for like $8.

What's funny is the dealership is usually a couple bucks cheaper. The one thing & probably the only thing that's cheaper there.

If you go to the dealer, buy a few. I hate going to the dealer. I'm always confronted with a salesman or woman wanting to buy my truck.

They stopped making the regular cab a few years after I bought mine. Kinda of a collector's item. lol.

Have a great day Tony! I have to go install a 4 ton A/C today. I'm the only one who can operate the crane.

    See ya later. :cookiemonster:

[IMG] They also carry Royal Purple oil, which is also excellent oil, at Walmart.

What is cool, it goes in purple so it's easy to read on the dipstick. It changes back to normal color after a couple days.

Was thinking filters from the dealer and Amsoil probably best of both worlds IMO.
Probably overthinking it all but to me the oil maintenance probably the most important thing of all even over how you drive it.
Yeah was just thinking about going to the dealer and getting two filters. The change oil sticker that the dealership has on the windshield said it was good for another 5 months or so and 5k miles then it dawned on me what if it was put on assuming the 10k or 1 year mark. And it’s halfway through already. They said it was just serviced.
I don’t know if that is what the dealer does but will find out because then its already getting time to change it. Not waiting the full 10k miles especially in this Florida heat.
Been literally mid 90’s with feels like much higher since May. Hottest year i ever remember last 40 years at least. Just finally cooled down a bit last week.
Not sure how much the outside temp really effects the synthetic oil as the engine runs same temp basically whatever the thermostat is at. Remember the old Castrol commercials that said its for smaller engines that run hotter. I get it bigger works less and can probably displace more heat I would think its the start up that matters most when they recommend thicker or thinner oil, but but i do know the heat sure wears me out quicker lol

You're throttle body probably needs to be cleaned. Take off the intake hose & spray it in there with the engine running. Helps if someone steps on the gas off & on.

The 2.7L is an oddball. They call for it to be changed every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

In the beginning they had a problem with sludge buildup using dino oil. That problem has been eliminated using synthetic.

I just change mine once a year, regardless of mileage. They just haven't updated the owner's manual.

0W-20 is fine for all year driving. Engines nowadays have tighter tolerances. You need the oil to get in all those nooks & crannies.

Think of an English Muffin, you want that butter to get in there, lol.

I'm off to start the crane. It's gonna be a bear, it hasn't run in a few months.

    See ya later.

The ol' change it once a year, regardless of mileage myth has been thoroughly debunked.
Unless, of course, you're making a lot of short trips, that might introduce condensation into the equation.

Well, that was fun. Took longer to get the crane started, than to do the actual work.

The guy above me does have an actual point. If the oil doesn't actually heat up, it will never evaporate the aqua in it fully.

Water is a bad lubricant. As long as you drive it 20 miles + a week, you're good.

I stick to changing the oil once a year. On my birthday that gives me & the truck a present, lol. I've gotta a lot of Amsoil in my stash.

Never a problem. I've rebuilt thousands of engines. Everything from Mack diesel trucks to little Briggs & Stratton engines.

I even taught a class at the local technical school. I made $1,000 for 15 minutes of work. Off to the the store I go.

    See ya later Tony. :cookiemonster:
