2004 F-350...uh lots of motor work to go fast...er. Way to much to list. 2001: 3" leveling kit, ARB bumper, lightforce 240 blitz, 35" KM2s. SOLD 2008: OME 886s 90000 with dakars, LR UCAs, 5% tint, Satashi. SOLD 2015: Flooded and Gone
i have a warn m8000 winch with cable. i know per warn it is best to use their spydura synthetic rope. i also read somewhere in a 4wheel magazine that in order to go from cable to synthetic it is best to switch out the drum that the line is spooled on to a spool that is better for synthetic. i have only used the winch 3-5 times. do i need to switch spools or can i keep the same one and just buy the synthetic and be okay. anyone want to chime in and/or give me better and cheaper but still effective tips. i.e. differnt lines and that good stuff.

I have never heard of switching out the drum.

I think most lines will come with a "drum wrap", a 10 ft sleeve to protect the line from the drum. Check out southeast overland, give Steve springs a call and he can help you out.

Okay, now what about the type of synthetic line? Cause warn said to use their line... Does it really matter

No it doesn't really matter, they just want you to buy theirs. Like I said, call or email Steve Springs at southeast overland. He will answer all your questions and get what you need.

You will be fine with any synthetic you choose. No need to change a drum, but depending on your fairlead if chewed up by the steel cable you made need to replace it. Or you could go with a hawse fairlead, or replace the steel rollers with delrin. Just buy an american made line made from amsteel blue, or Viking Line which I think is made in the Netherlands. As mentioned above, Steve at Southeast Overland is the synthetic winch line guru so send your questions towards him. Let me know if I can help in any other way

If you have a roller fairlead I would switch to hawse

I figured but doesn't hurt to ask about a new drum. I will be speaking with him tomorrow hopefully. As for my fairlead I don't think it is all chewed up but I will be switching out to a hawse if I'm able to figure something up with the arb bumper since the mount for the fairlead is deep as hell. Thanks guys!!

I'm sure Steve can get everything figured out. Swimgoodshady got his fairlead and line from him, on his ARB.

High quality synthetic winch line is usually made from Dyneema, which is a product of the Netherlands. Most of the nice synthetic winch lines are different colors of Dyneema packaged with options for hooks, etc.

I got my line from a supplier and a fellow member helped me with splicing (which seems fairly easy).

I will probably be purchasing synthetic today or tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback!

The consensus is true here. No need to change drum. You DO need to change the fairlead to a Hawse style. Synthetic lines always state you cannot use a roller fairlead for synthetic.

I have the same winch. Had Steve at southeast overland custom braid me 85ft of 5/8 blue amsteel.
Plus a custom thimble and hook. It has the drum sleeve as well as an abrasion sleeve.
Went back and had him do me another 50 ft of the same for an extension. Thimble at one end, hook at the other.
Can't go wrong with SEO. Steve knows his stuff.

They may say that but a hawse fairlead can damage a synthetic line during long pulls. It is best to a roller fairlead and new rollers or polyurethane rollers. that is coming straight from offroad trainer Bill Burke. A hawse fairlead can heat up due to the friction the rope causes on long pull and damage the rope.

With the drum just make sure there is no knicks or gouges in the drum. A good sanding will rid most of them.

I will check the drum tomorrow when I respool the line. Magic if you don't mind me asking what it cost?
I will check the tjm out as well.

Southeast overland will probably be your best bet. Heard lost of good things about them and there price is pretty fair. All there pricing is listed on there website. They can also put on a different hook end or a thimble like a viking one.
