    Mostly dust and dirt.
Today my Tacoma signaled that maintenance (oil change) was soon due.
This happens every 5000 miles. My manual says that with synthetic oil the changes only need be at 10,000 miles.
So is my dealer setting the maintenance signal too early or what?

No. Your owners manual describes what is going on and how to reset it.

The (oil change) is added by you, not the screen. Check your maintenance guide

The maintenance is the tire rotation. Check manual.

Leave truck on have odometer show mileage hold odometer reset and push push to start button twice or turn key to setting before start while still holding reset on the odometer you’ll see some dots wait for them to disappear.

I wouldn't be waiting 10K miles for an oil change, just my opinion .....

"Oil chemistry and engine technology have evolved tremendously in recent years, but you'd never know it from the quick-change behavior of American car owners. Driven by an outdated 3,000-mile oil change commandment, they are unnecessarily spending millions of dollars and spilling an ocean of contaminated waste oil.

The majority of automakers today call for oil changes at either 7,500 or 10,000 miles, and the interval can go as high as 15,000 miles in some cars. Yet this wasteful cycle continues largely because the automotive service industry, while fully aware of the technological advances, continues to preach the 3,000-mile gospel as a way to keep the service bays busy. As a result, even the most cautious owners are dumping their engine oil twice as often as their service manuals recommend."

The above is from Edmunds. To the OP, your owners manual calls for a tire rotation every 5k and an oil change every 10k, so that's why your reminder goes off every 5,000 miles. You change the oil every other service. That's what the Toyota maintenance schedule calls for and that's what you need to do to keep your warranty in tact.

Generally the consensus with these oil changes its one year for trucks driven 5k miles or less. Otherwise every 10k miles or one year.

Software must be slightly different on the US models?

Never seen an orange triangle or a reminder that I couldn't completely shut off at the head unit... or my dealer doesn't fuck with it.

    Meh, dunno :notsure:

Yup, exactly. Which is why these oil change interval discussions never reach a consensus.

Edmunds was holding back, but still well said. Been preaching longer oil change intervals for decades. API & SAE certified synthetic oils have been available since the '70s. Wasteful not to take advantage of their strengths.
Warranty will not be affected by change intervals (the oil must be the cause of failure to void it).

Regular service interval: Only drive on the highway and no short trips.
Severe service interval: normal drivers who do some short trips and some city or mountain driving.

Leasing or short term ownership, then none of the above matters.

I am less worried about the oil breaking down and more concerned on getting all of the metal shavings and toxins out of the vehicle, only way to do that is change the oil.

Correct, it does. And it's supposed to.

    Correct.

Dealer has no way to tinker with this.

Its merely a 'clock' that tell you you've gone 5k since the last reset. Your manual recommends certain things on 5k intervals.

If it's only been 5k since your last change and you are going to 10k, simply reset the indicator, and it will come on again in another 5k.

    5+5=10. :D

    Don't overthink it.

Not going down that rabbit hole just yet this morning, but have to say that "breaking down" and "toxins" are in the same boat. (Metal shavings are the filter's responsibility. Thus, change the filter halfway through the oil's life.) Synthetics don't oxidize, don't shear, don't stop lubricating, don't boil off, don't change viscosity, and (...rabbit hole).
But the additive package of anti-foam and acid neutralizing can be consumed by around 35,000 miles (if the engine is healthy; as in no coolant leaks or fuel dilution). So, when the filter is changed, a quantity of oil goes with it. Top up the system when the new filter is installed - and you've just replenished the additive package. So no more toxins that are not being taken care of.

Once you are changing the oil filter, its just being cheap or lazy to not change oil at the same time. And can you even remove a 3rd gen Taco oil filter without dumping the oil?

OTOH, I might show up at the Toyota dealer or maybe Jiffy Lube and tell them, "The internet advice I got was to change the oil filter only". I might be tempted to film the response.:D

Here is my thought every 5K will also give you a shot at checking every thing 10K will leave a gap big enough for some thing to go wrong tire ware, leaks, brakes, lights stuff like that. If you are doing it your self it's not that expensive.
