While the oil chemistry evolved the quality of the rest of the vehicles has gone downhill...yes even Toyota and Honda. The two vehicle manufacturers realized that it is not a good business strategy to make vehicles last too long...so why recommend oil changes every 5,6k?...when the whole idea is to make money on repairs or a new vehicle. People tend to fall for that, it's not like we drive Porsche's and Ferrari where oil changes costs hundreds of dollars o_O. Even here in Alberta I can do my own oil change for around $45...doesn't get any cheaper!, small insurance I'd say

While I may not necessarily agree with your theory, after making several trips flying into Calgary and driving out to Lethbridge for work a few years back at all times of the year, I can certainly understand why you would err on the side of caution to keep your truck running reliably. That wind is absolutely brutal! I would hate to have been stuck on the side of the road.

Yes, sometimes we get winds like that. I love Alberta and I do have a friend down in Jacksonville FL and he talks quite a bit about crazy weather down there...I suppose it's what we are used to. One thing for sure, nothing is more fresh than the northern Rocky Mountains air (we were just there...Banff) or the Alberta spring after a long winter.
Oil for my vehicles I generally buy it on sale, wallyworld sells Mobil 1 0w20 extended service (4.4L jug) for $29 Canuckistany dollars...oil filters I can find on sale for less than $10...

Yes. Though I don't have that many miles on my Taco yet.
My other ride has had 6 oil changes in it's 297,000 mile life, so far. It still runs like brand new, except the plastic is breaking from age. Grrr (it's a 1993)

    Shit. That's the math.
Now I have to go look at my records. (was only remembering 6 changes...)

edit: I looked. The blue text are excerpts from my excel sheet, my records.
I got the vehicle from my dad with 84000 miles. He had changed the oil 3 times by then (at 6k, ~25k, ~60k). Three times.

28-Nov-99 83950 Picked up car in IN from dad

I changed it at 90K: Fourth change.
10-Jun 90000 Adjusted valve clearance, R&R Timing belt and accessory belts, R&R Distributor cap and rotor, Rotated tires, Cleaned spark plugs, R&R Fuel filter (GF249), R&R Brake fluid, R&R Oil (0W-30), R&R Air filter, R&R Oil filter w/ (-36).

Put a different oil filter on at 100,700:
    30-Mar 100665 R&R Oil filter (-20), Replaced 1 qt.

    Changed filter again at 108,000:
    29-Oct 108016 R&R Oil Filter (-36), Replaced 1 qt. (0w-30).

Changed oil at 112,000: Fifth change.
    1-Aug 112245 R&R Oil, R&R Fltr (-36), R&R Xmsn Oil.

Changed oil at 130,000: Sixth time.
    4-Jul 129790 R&R Oil, R&R Filter (-36)

    Filter chg at 151,000:
    16-Jun 150780 R&R Oil Filter (-36), Replaced 1 qt Oil (0W-30)

    Chg filter again at 168,000:
12-May 168374 R&R Htd Oxygen Sensor, R&R Oil Fltr (-36), Rplcd 1qt Oil, ECS Reconnected

    18-Sep 236063 R&R Oil Filter

    9-Apr 250000 R&R Oil Filter added 1 qt.

Most recent change was the Seventh. I stand corrected.
    16-Sep 267565 R&R Oil & Filter (5w-30) & Wix (51334), R&R Xmsn lube (0w-20), Rotated tires

It is due for a change now too.

Why would you do that to your engine? I’m confused.

Not really confused, you just don't trust synthetic oil.
My engine will mic in at factory specs. There is no wear, there is no sludge, there's very, very little varnish. Compression is within specs.

So the only thing that I've "...done to my engine" is operate it and drive it.

I've always traded my cars in before getting the first oil change. :spending:

You or the engineers that designed the engine. Who should I listen to?

But in all reality, it's more of the idea and basic concept of; Peace of mind vs what a manufacturer recommend.
And we all know that the manufacturers and their dealerships ALWAYS know what they are talking about. Why should they ever lie about products just to sell an item. Just saying...

    Interesting.

Just still don’t understand why you skip on such cheap and simple maintenance.

Did you open up your engine to have a look inside? Did you do compression tests?

I’m in the same boat with my ‘21. Toyota dealer just told me to reset the light and wait till 10k? I checked the oil and it all seemed fine so i took their word for it..

I had my first 5K mile check-up done yesterday...took delivery of my '21 TRD Sport on May 14. Tire rotation and Diagnostic testing was all that they do plus wiper fluid top up.

Since this was the first oil change from time of delivery, I went ahead and paid for the oil change...next scheduled maintenance visit is at 10K miles which will include the oil change.

I did visual inspection and noticed some normal wear on the rear tires...which means they rotated them from the front. On weekends I will use my crawler and slide underneath to do visual inspection.

I'm leasing this truck, and every scheduled service is included for the full term of the lease, so I'm just letting them do what they do.

I'm in almost the exact place, '21 OR, got it in May, just passed 5K. Brought it in for the 5K service (all services included in Lease) and they didn't even offer me an "extra fee" oil change. Rotate tires, do some other checks, fill the wiper fluid (with something really stinky) and I was out.

If it were my truck, I'd do an oil change at 5k, then the Toyota changes at 10k and every 10k there after. An extra one here or there won't hurt, but as long as it's not mine, I'm not going to bother.

Modern synthetic oils are a marvel and it's been proven and proven over and over for decades. But everyone has to do what they feel most comfortable with.

Something that I don't think has been mentioned yet is that I actually enjoy working on cars and always have. I have been known to change my oil out of shear fucking boredom! Same thing with brakes; sometimes I will look at my pads and see a decent amount of material left but will change them out anyway just for something to do. Cheap entertainment! :)
